Lying along Afghanistan’s northern border, most of Tajikistan's population belong to the Persian-speaking Tajik ethnic group, who share language, culture and history with both Afghanistan and Iran. Starkly beautiful, remote and beguiling, mountains cover more than 90% of the country and include such famous names as Peak Lenin and Peak Communism both over 7,000m. While accommodation is at best adequate and the roads diabolical, all is made up for by the hospitality of the local people.
Because it is wild and one of the last forgotten corners of the globe. Central Asia is a fascinating part of the world with a rich and colourful history that eludes many travellers. In the days of the Silk Road its wealth was legendary and towns and cities that grew up along the route were famed throughout the world.
There are few places in the world quite as remote as the mountains of Tajikistan and for the moment it must remain the preserve of the individual who recognises that despite all the best laid plans and our own extensive knowledge, an itinerary in Tajikistan should be considered an aim rather than as carved in stone.
Paul has been with Steppes for over twenty years now and even before he joined Steppes he was travelling through Central Asia at a time when few westerners knew where it was. Over the years he has returned time and time again and thrives on creating fascinating itineraries into forgotten corners.
