A Journey around Sri Lanka

The journey starts with a stay at Horathapola, 90 minutes’ drive from the airport and the perfect spot to relax. Spend a night here acclimatising and recovering from the long flight.

From here travel northeast to the historical, Buddhist UNESCO sites of Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, in the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka where frescoes, ancient stupas and stone carvings are found. Travel onwards to Kandy to visit the Temple of the Tooth, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Close to the city of Kandy is a beautiful planter's bungalow set in 62 acres of tea and rubber estate. Explore the estate, visit the local tea factory and spend time by the pool. You then take a short, internal flight with Cinnamon Air between Kandy and Galle, which avoids the need for a long road transfer. Finish with a day to discover the cultural and vibrant town of Galle, staying in a small, boutique hotel before heading off to the Maldives.

the Maldives

A short flight from Colombo takes you to Male, the capital of the Maldives. The airport is home to a fleet of seaplanes and sleek speedboats, ready to whisk guests to their respective tropical island paradises. Here, at your chosen island resort there is nothing more to focus on than the snorkelling, fresh seafood BBQ’s and choosing from the spa menu – total bliss.

You will be met as you disembark from the plane by an airport representative who will escort you to a nearby lounge. You will be served drinks and a small snack while your luggage is collected from the carousel. Please note you will either meet your chauffeur guide in the airport lounge or will be taken to meet him in the parking area outside the terminal. Sri Lanka's sprawling capital buzzes with an effervescence and ebullience not seen anywhere else in the country. Drawing on its colonial past, it now combines ancient, colonial and modern influences in a swirl of cultures, colours and aromas particular to Sri Lanka.

You will be staying at Horathapola Estate, bed and breakfast

Day 2

Activities at Horathapola Estate
Horathapola Estate lends itself wonderfully to relaxation but there are two great activities available. A bullock cart ride around the coconut plantation and a village walk in the surrounding village. There is also a swimming pool in the garden.

Drive from Horathapola to Sigiriya (Road Journey)

The 130 kilometre drive from Horathapola to Sigiriya will take approximately four hours.

Sigiriya is a large stone and ancient rock fortress and palace ruin in the central Matale District of Sri Lanka, surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures. Sigiriya is also renowned for its ancient paintings (frescos), which are reminiscent of the Ajanta Caves of India. It is one of the eight World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka.

On arrival at the hotel, relax at your leisure.

Visit to Sigiriya Rock
Explore the ruins of the ancient city of Sigiriya with your English speaking guide. Climb up this rock column, which is surrounded by verdant royal gardens. Arrive at the rock entrance by 7 am to avoid the crowds and be amongst the first few visitors at the site. Sigiriya consists of 1,200 steps. The tour takes approximately two and a half hours.

You will be staying at Vil Uyana, bed and breakfast

Day 3

Tour of Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura and is home to one of the countries most important cultural sites. Further afield within Polonnaruwa, many other interesting sites can be found. Spend the morning exploring the ancient city. Later feast on rice and curry at a local restaurant bordering scenic rice fields.

Peddling the back roads of Polonnaruwa
There is no better way to explore Polonnaruwa than pedalling the less trodden back roads. Your cycling guide is a local villager and shares insider knowledge of the area. Starting off from Bendiwewa, the trail is 13 kilometres. Pass by a local house for kurumba made from coconut. Pass beautiful rural countryside, passing lakes and lush forests. Your car and driver will be waiting for you at the end of the ride.

You will be staying at Vil Uyana, bed and breakfast

Day 4

Drive from Sigiriya to Kandy (Road Journey)

This morning travel to Kandy, a journey of approximately four hours, visiting the Dambulla Caves en route.

Kandy is the second largest city in Sri Lanka after Colombo and is home to some of the most famous sites in the country. The Botanical Gardens, which are the second largest in the world after Kew in England, house an amazing collection of flowers and trees aswell as a world famous orchid house. It is also possible to see the outside of Lord Mountbatten's colonial house within the gardens. Temple of the Tooth is believed to house a tooth of Lord Buddha himself. This precious relic attracts white-clad pilgrims, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani, every day.

Half Day Trip to the Temple of the Tooth
Visit the revered Temple of the Tooth, which houses a tooth that is said to have come from Buddha himself. Attracting vast numbers of white-clad pilgrims, the temple is often swarming with people bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani.
According to legend, the tooth was removed as Buddha lay on his funeral pyre. It was smuggled to Sri Lanka in the fourth century, escaping the Hindu armies that were sweeping through India. Since then, this precious relic has been treated with great reverence and has survived several attempts to capture or destroy it. The tour will take approximately two hours.

You will be staying at Ellerton, bed and breakfast

Day 5

Pedalling through the Tea Estate
Visit Orange Field and meet Mr Sebastian who will share enthusiastically with you the details on how tea gets prepared. Take to the bikes and go for a short cycling tour that will lead you around pristine views of the village and tea plantations. Breakfast will be arranged at a scenic location. Head back to the property and spend the rest of the day at leisure enjoying the homely atmosphere.

You will be staying at Ellerton, bed and breakfast

"It was extremely helpful to work in conjunction with Joe and his much more up to date knowledge of India and arrive at an itinerary which we were happy with. We enjoyed the whole trip and probably what made it special for us was the fact that all the arrangements worked so well and we really didn’t have to worry about anything at all. Even when we decided to make a small change it was dealt with efficiently and promptly. We can't think of anything that would have made our trip more enjoyable."

Kate Hitchen, Travel Expert

"Kate was calm and bent over backwards to accommodate my jitters about going to Kashmir in the light of tighter FCO guidelines just a few days before our departure. She was absolutely correct in advising against what I thought we should do. Several times during the holiday we said that, 'Kate was dead right about that!'."

"We asked for a rather particular kind of Indian holiday. You delivered it in full. Highlights? Honestly, each day was a highlight in itself. "
