Spitsbergen - In Depth Polar Bear Cruise

Circumnavigate the rugged and wild island of Spitsbergen in search of polar bears, whales, & walrus

14 days

from £7,800pp (excluding flights)
  • A one-off departure offering the most comprehensive voyage of Spitsbergen available
  • A full 15 day Arctic expedition around Spitsbergen, offering the highest chances of exceptional polar bear and wildlife encounters
  • Experience the wildlife of the region including polar bear, walrus, seals, arctic fox, reindeer and whales, along with a wide variety of migratory birds

This extended Arctic expedition presents the greatest opportunity for seeing the polar bear. Zodiacs are used to take expedition members to numerous landing sights or to cruise along the dramatic coastline looking for wildlife. Drift alongside towering cliffs, with expansive bird colonies and photograph spectacular glaciers and walrus haul-outs. With almost 24 hours of sun, time is virtually unlimited and expedition guides are always on hand to inform and enthuse about the wildlife and history of the region. When not on shore or in a zodiac,  attend  informal lectures onboard, covering everything from the flora and fauna of the region and tales of the early explorers through to ice navigation techniques.

Day 1

Fly London to Longyearbyen

You will be staying at Basecamp Hotel, Bed & Breakfast

Day 2

Longyearbyen embarkation
Board the ship in Longyearbyen. Set sail in the afternoon and, for the first time, admire the island's rugged, glacier-topped mountains, rising majestically from icy Arctic waters.

The former mining town of Longyearbyen offers the Svalbard Museum and the North Pole Expedition Museum, both located close to The University Centre. The nearby Svalbard Gallery houses an interesting collection of artwork, maps, books and notes. Keen birders can make their way to the bay, a wonderful place to look for waders. A short stroll away is the infamous polar bear warning sign, while the tiny Svalbard Church is located on the far side of the valley.

Day 3

Exploring Spitsbergen & the Svalbard Archipelago
Expect a new adventure every day, as the ship circles the island of Spitsbergen, exploring smaller, outlying islands. Savour the wide variety of wildlife and stunning geological formations found here. Every expedition will be unique, but favouite landing sites include the 14th of July Glacier, Ny Alesund, Phippsoya, Alkefjellet and Sundneset. If ice conditions allow, there may also be the chance to stop at seldom-visited Kvttøya.

Each of these sites has its own unique appeal. The 14th of July Glacier is home to purple sandpipers, common eiders, barnacle geese and Arctic terns, whilst Alkefjellet features nesting thick-billed murres. Reindeers roam the landscape at sites like Ny Alesund, Sundneset and Alkhornet, offering fantastic photography opportunities. Meanwhile, the search for the world's largest land carnivore, the polar bear, is an ever-present distraction. Both Phippsoya and Isbukta offer the highest chances of a lucky sighting, with the potential to capture photographs of these fearsome predators whilst hunting.

Also have the chance to appreciate and understand Spitsbergen's unique culture. Learn not just how people live today, but how this land was first explored. Whaling was a key industry here; see the blubber ovens and other whaling evidence at landing sites such as Smeerenburg.

Throughout the voyage, admire the colourful tundra meadows and immense glaciers that greet travellers to this remote landscape. As the ship slowly makes its way through the icy Arctic waters, hope to encounter one of the region's elusive beluga whales.

Day 13

After breakfast on board, disembark and transfer ashore

Roxy Dukes, Travel Expert

"Roxy filled us with enthusiasm and came up with some great ideas for a trip. We liked the idea of a slightly 'off the beaten track experience' and some private bespoke activities and that's exactly what we've had. Thank you!"

"Roxy created a wonderfully interesting route which was the basis for a super trip. She also chose lovely places for us to stay and interesting activities for us to participate in, introducing us to the idea of private guided experiences which we thoroughly enjoyed."

Sue Grimwood, Travel Expert

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
