Accommodation in Spitsbergen ranges from tents to modern low rise chains such as the Radisson to expedition lodges in the middle of the wilderness, to converted ships, frozen in the ice. Of course there is also a wide range of expedition ships for those wishing to travel by boat.
Basecamp Trappers Lodge
Most expeditions to Svalbard begin in Longyearbyen. For those looking for a homely stay, Basecamp Trappers Hotel is a great choice. Chalet in style with lots of wood, the lodge has a Russian hunter’s cottage feel. The 16 rooms are decorated with driftwood, seal skin, maps and artwork that illustrate the past and present of life in the arctic.
Isfjord Radio Station
Most trips begin in Longyearbyen. Whether you are due to board an expedition ship or travel across the ice by snow mobile or a team of huskies, the variety of trips pose a variety of accommodation. Some 90 kilometres from Longyearbyen is an outpost radio station. In the thirties this was a solitary outpost for radio operators. Today, it has been transformed into a charming boutique hotel at the end of the earth.
The Noorderlicht attracts many visitors. This unique accommodation is wonderful way to experience the Arctic. The remodelled German Schooner is frozen in the ice of Templefjorden. The yacht offers 10 comfortable cabins and guests can experience (with a little comfort) what it was like for the Arctic explorers who found themselves trapped in the ice on board their ships. The views from Noorderlicht are beautiful. If you are very lucky you may even observe wildlife such as seals, walrus, arctic foxes even a polar bear.
