Alhambra from Albaicin in Granada, Andalusia, Spain

Spain

A passionate and culturally rich country famous for its historic cities, diverse landscapes, enduring cultures, and traditions.

More diverse than most people imagine, Spain is a collection of iconic sights, sounds and smells. Travel to the hot Andalusian plains for grand cathedrals and white hilltop villages or the snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees and Picos de Europa for remote jagged mountain tops.

Hear the rhythm of flamenco in Madrid’s backstreets and taste wine and tapas from hidden bars in the Basque region. Spain is culturally abundant with passion interwoven into the very fabric of everyday life. Famous yes for glittering beaches but it is Spain’s historic cities, contrasting landscapes, enduring cultures, and traditions, which bring it to life.

Why choose Spain

With some of Europe’s most celebrated historical cities, charming, whitewashed villages, craggy mountains and fertile valleys, Spain is a collection of the known and unknown. Move away from the obvious highlights to find hidden wildlife with the lynx of Andalucía or bears in Cantabria and Asturias. Stay in charming homesteads to experience authentic Spanish hospitality and meet artisan food producers in San Sabastian to the Marques de Riscal winery in La Rioja.

Why travel to Spain with Steppes

Many have rightly explored the Islamic beauty of the Alhambra in Seville or marvelled at the architectural majesty of Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, but few have discovered the hidden corners of this diverse country, from the Mercado de Abastos in Santiago de Compostela to a private lodge working to restore the lynx population in Andalucía. Steppes have a keen eye for local suppliers, eclectic wildlife and cultural guides while ensuring travel continues to enhance communities and engage in a positive and restorative way.

Spain beyond the classics

• Taste delicious red wine at lesser known vineyards of Rioja and Alava while exploring the buzzing local towns dotted with pilgrim churches
• Explore some of the smaller villages such as A Guarda, a fishing port in Galicia close to the Portuguese border. Home to a pretty harbour and fresh seafood, worthy a few days of gentle walking.
• Spend a few peaceful hours at Aljaferia found in the less visited Aragon region, considered a jewel of 11 century Islamic architecture.

Kate Hitchen

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way.

Charlotte Lawton

Charlotte is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Asia.

My strong sense of belonging in Asia stemmed from a childhood in Hong Kong and Nepal. My Grandmother was born in a tent in India. Some of my clearest memories are of walking through a dense, tropical jungle while hailstones the size of cricket balls rained down on us; of being carried on my father’s shoulders as we trekked through the Himalayas; my mother wearing flipflops on a snowy mountainside; and me falling into Dal Lake in Srinagar as we disembarked from our houseboat.

Rachael Tallents

Adventure, discovery and my curiosity for people and the natural world is what drives my love of travelling.  I am grateful for my parents’ desire to explore, and from an early age my eyes were open to diverse landscapes, cultures, and underwater worlds.

For the last 16 years, I have worked for a leading luxury tour operator designing incredible journeys for discerning clients and travelled to some magical places. I am excited to have joined Steppes Travel, and to be working for a company with such strong ethical and sustainable values.
