Tailor-Made Holiday

Selous, Ruaha and Swahili Coast Safari

Southern Tanzania bush and beach

12 days

from £5,795pp (excluding flights)

For those seeking a true African wilderness experience, this holiday is essential. Although the reserves and parks in southern Tanzania may not be as well-known as parks in the north, to safari connoisseurs they are without doubt some of most spectacular in all of Africa. After an exhilarating safari spend time relaxing on the unspoilt beaches of the Swahili coast.

  • Explore Selous and Ruaha, Tanzanias remote and uncrowded southern parks
  • Get out of the 4x4 and experience excellent walking safaris
  • Game viewing by boat on the Rufiji River
  • Snorkel, swim and relax on the white sandy beaches of the Swahili coast

This journey explores two of Africa’s most remote and unexplored wildlife areas - Ruaha National Park and the Selous Game Reserve. These parks are also known to have large number of wild dogs, huge herds of elephant, and are especially good for bird lovers. The large forests, open savannah plains and rivers and lake systems are unique in East Africa and activities are varied – game drives, walking and boating through channels and swamps, exploring hidden lagoons. After a busy safari, spend a few days relaxing on the deserted shores of the Indian Ocean on the beautiful Swahili Coast.

Ruaha National Park is renowned for its arid remoteness and excellent game viewing, which includes the rare, greater kudu and huge concentrations of elephant - the largest population in any East African national park.

This is prime wildlife viewing territory - lions, cheetahs and leopards lord over the savannah, stalk the open grassland and lurk in tangled riverine thickets.

Day 3

Days at Ruaha
Spend time exploring the Ruaha National Park, setting out on game drives and bush walks. Led by expert guides, venture out in open 4x4 vehicles, leaving once during the morning, and again during the afternoon. Return before dark, and spend the evening in camp. Take bush walks at dawn, before game drives leave camp, to make the most of the cooler hours of the day.

Discover this biodiverse wilderness, which is dotted with animal and bird life. More than 560 species of birds can be spotted within the park, but also expect to encounter elephants, buffaloes, lions, hippos and giraffes. There are various antelope species, including dikdiks and kudus. Packs of wild dogs are known to roam the park, but sightings can never be guaranteed.

Ruaha is a wilderness adventure playground waiting to be explored and is one of the few parks in Africa where you can drive all day and not see another vehicle.

Day 5

Travel from Ruaha National Park to Selous Game Reserve (Air Transfer Journey)

Set around the lush riverine ecosystem of the Rufiji River, the Selous Game Reserve is the largest in Africa. The central area of the reserve offers the best game viewing with the river drawing an excellent diversity of plains game, predators and superb birdlife. The reserve allows boat safaris, fishing for tiger fish and walking safaris in addition to the more traditional 4x4 adventures. This gives a completely different perspective to the safari and allows for a far more interactive experience.

Day 6

Days at Siwandu
Spend time exploring the landscape of the Selous Game Reserve, taking advantage of the activities available at Siwandu. Set out on game drives, bush walks and boat cruises, led by highly trained guides.

Game drives leave camp in the morning and afternoon, whilst bush walks set out at dusk or dawn, making the most of the cooler temperatures. These offer a different perspective on the surrounding landscape, allowing you to learn about the intricacies of the bush. Boat trips explore the Rufiji River delta, allowing for relaxed sightings of animals that come to the water to drink, with the chance to sip sundowners on board.

The landscape surrounding Siwandu is mixture of waterways and savannah lands, dotted with acacia woodlands and the occasional palm tree. An expansive area, it is home to elephants, lions, hippos, wild dogs and many other species. The birding is excellent, with more than 400 species sighted.

Ras Kutani is designed for relaxation, away from safari adventures. Relax beside the pool, sunbathe on the beach or lie in the terrace hammock with views of the ocean. Between July and October, there is even the chance to spot migrating humpback whales as they swim past Ras Kutani.

For those who prefer to be more active, there are a range of activities available. Kayaks and boogie boards are provided, as well as snorkelling equipment. This is perfect for exploring the offshore shipwreck of The Chyko, which is home to an array of colourful fish. Volleyball and petanque can also be played on the beach.

Also take walks through the forest behind the camp, which is home to monkeys, butterflies and other animals. As well as this, excursions to watch turtles hatch can be arranged via the NGO Sea Sense (dependent on season).

Jackie Devereux, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
