Marking the southern end of the Great Rift Valley, South Luangwa is the richest park in Zambia and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa for scenery and variety of animals. Its 3,500sq miles is unsurpassed and the Luangwa River, which meanders gently through it, enhances it even further. A combination of ox bow lakes, forest and plains are host to huge concentrations of game, while providing shelter to over 400 species of birds.

Day 3

Days at Kafunta
With direct access via its own pontoon to the remote region of South Luangwa National Park, Kafunta offers a wilder, more authentic experience than most in the area. Early morning drives are of course on offer, but the lodge also has some excellent, very relaxed walking options with superb guides.

Afternoon drives brings sun-downers and thirsty animals coming to drink and then as night falls, the nocturnal animals begin to emerge. You can however relax and let the wildlife come to you as the lodge has an excellent hide overlooking rich flood plain, or you can watch the world go by at Luangwa's only natural hot tub, fed by a natural geothermal source. Being more remote, there is also the chance for a humbling visit to a nearby community, with whom the lodge works closely. If this is all too much, then simply retreat to the spa and unwind.

Day 4

Take a game drive to Island Bush Camp

Day 5

Days at Island Bush Camp
Given the remoteness of the area, time at Island Bush Camp is very much about getting out on foot to experience the wilderness in a new light. Fully escorted, relaxed walks, morning and afternoon allows for a very different and much more personal safari. From a chance meeting with elephants to the carmine bee-eaters colonies found in the region, every day and every walk is different. Slow paced, engaging and flexible, the walks are designed to open up a whole new perspective on wildlife. Whilst walking is the main activity here, traditional drives are also offered, as a means or accessing the remote areas within the park, but also to allow for a mixture of driving and walking so the pace is relaxed. Night drives here are particularly rewarding.

Jackie Devereux, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
