Tailor-Made Holiday

Family Holiday South Africa

Ultimate Cape escape - Tswalu Kalahari and Cape Town

15 days

from £3,795pp (excluding flights)

Taking young children to South Africa is easy and there are many hotels which will welcome you all by offering child friendly activities and value. In the process, parents or grandparents can enjoy the experience of a well-deserved holiday without compromise.

  • Meet the Meerkat of the Kalahari
  • Marvel at the colours of the Two Oceans Aquarium
  • Stalk cheetah in the Karoo
  • No malaria

Without any time difference, the malaria free Cape offers much for the intrepid young traveller with parents and grandparents in tow. The holiday starts in the Kalahari, a semi desert region in the Northern Cape which is home to an abundance of specially adapted wildlife. Discover the Meerkat and spring hares on foot and endangered rhino and lion from a vehicle. All safe in the hands of specialist guides.

Cape Town is a small plane ride away which is free for the parents on this holiday. The many attractions and activities in Cape Town will keep the most active people busy and the hotel is very well positioned to access many of the attractions or a taxi can make the rest accessible. If per chance a stay in the city includes a Friday night, try the family atmosphere at the Hout bay market and food stalls where all the local families gather.

Samara Private Game Reserve is a place of peace in the Karoo, another area of outstanding beauty with all the amenities that parents will appreciate whilst still encouraging children into nature. Walking with giraffe and tracking cheetah are some of the exciting pastimes whilst there is much to learn from the expert guides on twice daily safari excursions.

Travel from Cape Town to Kalahari Reserve (Air Transfer Journey)

Keeping busy at Tswalu
Whist at Tswalu you have many choices of activities. You could embark on an early morning game drive, don't rush back for breakfast. Request a delicious gourmet picnic - breakfast in the bush is a memory to savour. You could bond with the meerkats before they go foraging for the day or spend the morning tracking the Desert Black rhino with arguably the best trackers in Africa. Do something different by spending an early evening tracking the elusive Aardvark and Pangolin - probably one of the best places in the world to view these rare animals. If the mood takes you, you could get up close to the animals on horseback, and experience nature at its best, perhaps sleep out under the stars - just you and the expanse of the Kalahari, star gazing was never like this. If you need to relax then visit the spa before indulging in a 5 course menu paired with South Africa's finest wines and served in the privacy of your own deck. Visit the community health centre, children's school and adult learning centre and see the immense benefit of the Tswalu Foundation in action - talk to the conservation researchers about their studies. Sip a sun-downer cocktail on the dunes, and experience the real Africa.

Day 6

Travel from Kalahari Reserve to Cape Town (Air Transfer Journey)

Half Day uThando Tour
The Uthando tour offers a unique and authentic introduction to the social problems confronting so many millions of South Africans, while also illustrating the innovative and inspirational ways in which they are being handled by these marginalised and destitute communities.
Very importantly, the projects are not treated as tourist attractions and the tours are designed in such a way as to educate, inform and inspire while also respecting the dignity and privacy of the people concerned. The projects are, after all, places where people live, work and in most cases, just survive.
A portion of the tour cost goes directly to uThando charities.

Lying immediately beneath Table Mountain, Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, a true melting pot of diverse cultures with a fascinating past.

The central city is packed full of quirky roads to explore and the Victoria & Albert Waterfront offers mainstream shopping with a great harbour. Restaurants here are world class, with a fusion of cuisines from fresh seafood to Cape Malay, complimented by incredible wines from the Cape Winelands nearby.

To the south of the city are the picturesque golden beaches of Bantry Bay, Clifton, and Camps Bay. Friendly and welcoming, Cape Town is a city you can't help but love.

You will be staying at One and Only, Bed & Breakfast

Day 7

Robben Island - Suggestion
Delve into South Africa's political past and board a ferry from the V&A Waterfront to Robben Island. Here you will be joined by a local guide - someone who spent time on the island during the apartheid years - thus able to give a personal and often moving account of time spent there. Learn about the island's most famous prisoner, Nelson Mandela, and see his cell where he spent nearly 27 years of his life. Ferries depart from 9 am.

You will be staying at One and Only, Bed & Breakfast

Day 8

Things to do in Cape Town
Spend a day or more exploring Cape Town. Explore Kirstenbosch Gardens and enjoy rooibos tea at the Café. Ascend Table Mountain by cable car, swim with penguins at Boulders Beach or walk with them on the board walk. Learn about Just Nuisance as you eat famous fish and chips at Simon's Town Harbour. Discover shipwrecks at Cape Point with a picnic or eat sushi at the Two Oceans Restaurant.

Drive back from the point via the scenic Chapman's Peak and the Hout Bay Harbour Market. Meet the friendly city inhabitants on Noordhoek, Clifton, Kommetjie, Camps Bay and Llandudno beaches. Walk through the city to discover the Castle, Greenmarket Square and the many museums found there. Bustle through the V&A Waterfront to the aquarium and harbour-side bars and follow Mandela on the Long Walk to Freedom at Robben Island.

Savour high tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel, overlooking the Company Gardens, or taste wine and eat at the vineyards of Klein Constantia, Constantia Glen and Steenberg Estates. Get aboard a boat, take a kayak trip to Seal Island or swim with Cape Fur seals.

You will be staying at One and Only, Bed & Breakfast

Day 9

Last day to enjoy Cape Town perhaps lounge by the pool today before your next adventure begins

You will be staying at One and Only, Bed & Breakfast

Day 10

Fly Cape Town to Port Elizabeth

A Typical Day on Safari
Although it changes from lodge to lodge, there is common routine amongst all the safari camps in South Africa. Usually there are 2 game drives a day. The morning one starts at daybreak and the evening one starts in the afternoon and extends to a night drive, complete with flashlight by which you can see the nocturnal species. Most diurnal animals are avoided at night.

The game reserves of the Eastern Cape are not only malaria free, but most are also home to the Big 5, making them a great choice for a family safari or to end off a trip to the Cape region. The wonderful diversity of the beautiful Karoo landscapes and flora and fauna is what makes this area so different from other safari destinations.

Famous for its large elephant herds is Addo Elephant Park. For great game viewing and luxurious lodges, there are various private game reserves such as Kwandwe, Shamwari, Amakhala and Samara offering activities from game drives and walking safaris to horse-riding and river cruises.

Day 11

Activities for the day at Samara

Day 12

Activities for the day at Samara
Another day to explore this fascinating area, perhaps take advantage of an Aarvark Safari. At Samara they are renowned for the unusually high incidence of these famously shy and elusive creatures and a night safari would increase the opportunity of encountering one of them. Sightings cannot be guaranteed but in the winter months it is more likely.
