Marataba Safari Lodge

Marataba Safari Lodge is situated on a private concession, in the malaria-free Marakele National Park. Set at the foot of the Waterberg Mountains, this impressive lodge begins with a dramatic, stone-stacked reception. Here, a wooden walkway opens out onto panoramic views of the mountains.

Beautifully designed, this unobtrusive lodge incorporates burnt-red stones and pale woods, decorated with African pieces of art and antiques. The open-plan design means that communal areas are relaxed and spacious.

Why We Like Marataba

Set away from the safari rat race, Marataba offers easy access, diverse activities, sumptuous and original accommodation and a unique safari. Easily accessible from Johannesburg, it perfectly complements a range of other South African destinations, as well as beach escapes like Madagascar and Mauritius.

Facilities

The 15 tented suites are an interesting, airy design, constructed from canvas, timber and stone. They are set on elevated, rounded platforms. Oversized stone bath tubs are a feature of the bohemian-style bathrooms.

All suites are air-conditioned, include ceiling fans and open out to a private deck, overlooking the meandering river. Above the savannah landscape, the spectacular mountains rise up – a beautiful backdrop to the already wonderful views of the reserve.

Activities

The beautiful Marataba Reserve features impressive red-rock bluffs above lush savannah grasslands, whilst clear rivers cut their way through deep valleys. Yellowwood and cedar trees dot the landscape, which is rich with big game.

Elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions and buffaloes can all be found here. The birdlife is also spectacular. Home to the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures, the reserve is said to hold between 600 and 800 breeding pairs.

Activities include:

  • Morning and evening game drives
  • Bush walks
  • Astronomy (night-sky safaris)
  • Sundowner boat trips

Location

Marataba Safari Lodge is located within the Marakele National Park, which is around 250 kilometres north of Johannesburg. This area, dotted with national parks and game reserves, is usually considered malaria-free, making it a popular destination for families travelling with young children. Access is by air or road from Johannesburg.

"Marataba is wonderful - stunning location, gorgeous 'tents', superb rangers, good food. Loved it."
