The Oyster Box

The Oyster Box is an iconic hotel, complete with lighthouse, it is a landmark on the Umhlanga beach on the outskirts of Durban in Kwa-Zulu Natal. After a refurbishment that took two years the Oyster Box has once again taken its place as one of South Africa's most striking hotels.

A sister to the Twelve Apostles in Cape Town and Bushman's Kloof in the Cederberg, the same easy luxury is an integral part of this hotel.

Umhlanga has always been the place to go if you want a great family beach near Durban and it still is. Enjoy spotting dolphins from the Ocean Terrace. The Oyster Box is very family friendly but is large enough for everyone to find a comfortable space amongst the 86 rooms and suites. Family rooms have two bedrooms for privacy and personal space, whereas the suites offer an adjoining lounge. You can even choose a standalone Garden Villa loft or the double story Penthouse Presidential suite for ultimate relaxation.

Why we like it

Bridget and Illona grew up visiting this hotel. Even now it’s the place to go for a wonderful lunch overlooking the sea. The Oyster Box is a much loved institution that is very stylish and special.
