Situated within strolling distance of the restaurants, art galleries and shops, Leeu House is at the heart of quiet Franschhoek. Facing the street with its striking Cape Dutch-style façade, this beautiful property is conveniently located, yet wonderfully secluded behind its whitewashed walls.
Inside, natural fabrics blend well with the neutral colours and clean lines of this expertly appointed house. Pieces of artwork brighten the minimalist interior, whilst the furniture is largely locally produced, with some pieces by the renowned Pierre Cronje. Outside, beautifully landscaped gardens surround a large, heated swimming pool and are dotted with sculptures.
Leeu House is home to 12 individually styled rooms, half of which have adjoining terraces. There is also a lounge, bar and restaurant - The Conservatory.
SIMPLE BUT WELCOMING ROOMS
The modern, clean rooms make the most of their simple design, with the black-and-white tiled bathrooms contrasting superbly with the bedrooms’ neutral colours. Artwork and plush, locally made furnishings add dashes of colour and individual quirks, without disrupting the relaxed ambience of these minimalist rooms.
Half of the rooms come with their own personal access to the outdoors. Two have private balconies, two have intimate terraced courtyards and two open out onto to their own private gardens.
Leeu Houses simple, elegant design is complemented perfectly by the pieces of art and the sculptures that dot the property – both inside and outdoors. In particular, the reception area is home to two remarkably striking pieces by Lionel Smit.
However, it is outside – in front of the house – where the standout pieces are displayed. Standing so they look out towards Huguenot Road, life-size figures of Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi welcome guests to Leeu House. These beautiful statues are sculpted from bronze, the former by Egon Tani and the latter by Anton Momberg.
Lee House’s beautiful restaurant, The Conservatory, is renowned for its range of innovative dishes, designed by executive chef Oliver Cattermole. Showcasing organic and locally produced ingredients, it produces a wonderful array of fusion dishes. There is the option to dine inside The Conservatory or outside, on the terrace.
Alternatively, the nearby Tuk Tuk Microbrewery is also part of the Leeu Collection. A more relaxed set up that is perfect for families and couple alike, this vibrant eatery offers a range of Mexican-style dishes in a relaxed brewery setting.
