Leopard, South Africa Safari

South Africa Holidays

Few places offer as much diversity as South Africa. Reborn as the Rainbow Nation, this enthralling country offers culture, wildlife, landscapes and history – all as varied as the country itself. Vibrant Cape Town and the magnificent Kruger attract most attention, but South Africa is dotted with private reserves, boutique properties and activities for all ages.

Our South Africa Holiday Experts

Both Illona and Bridget were born in South Africa and have travelled around the country from an early age.

Illona qualified as a safari guide and worked in various lodges, before joining Steppes in 2000. She has since returned on many occasions with her children. Bridget also has 16 years of  travel experience, having visited South Africa numerous times during the last decade.

Advice from our South Africa Experts

"I believe that you can see the world in one country, when travelling in South Africa. Sandy beaches, snow-capped mountains, lush vineyards and the Kruger National Park provide a plethora of dramatic scenery.

Despite being vast in size, travelling around the country is surprisingly easy, making a combination of the country’s highlights, not just possible, but also incredibly rewarding."

"The Sabi Sands, for me, provide one of the greatest all-round safari experiences on the continent. First timers and seasoned safari goers alike will relish a safari here, thanks to the outstanding wildlife sightings on offer. And with the rand having fallen in recent years, a trip to the Sabi Sands is currently incredibly good value."

South Africa FAQs

Collapse all
Can I charge my camera/phone on safari?

Almost all safari lodges in South Africa have either a generator or solar power. This will provide electricity to the camp, but you may not have plug points in your room. There will be somewhere that you can charge your camera or phone but this maybe in the managers office.

How long are the flights to South Africa?

South African Airways, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic offer the most direct to South Africa, London to Johannesburg is around 11 1/2 hours and London to Cape Town 12 hours.

What should I take on safari?

Cotton layers such as t-shirts, a light fleece, shorts and a pair of long trousers are the key items. The temperature can vary quite a bit from the early morning game drive to the heat of the day. Sun screen, a hat and a swimming costume are the other necessities. It is best to avoid bright colours for a safari. Footwear should include a pair of sandals or flip flops and some walking shoes (trainers would be fine).

Blog: How do you beat a family holiday in South Africa?

"Jabulani turned the end of his trunk upwards inviting contributions. The children with huge smiles on their faces poured pellets into his trunk. I didn't know who was happier – Jabu in receiving his treats, the children in touching, feeling his trunk or me in enjoying my children’s delight."

"Impressed by the service received.
Excellent folder of information and the inclusion of small amount of local currency was great. Bridget most helpful and responsive to our requirements including budget. Detailed itinerary and also first rate travel instructions."

"We are still amazed...

Timothy Redman

South Africa
"Safari booked 4 days before departure and Illona had actually worked and lived in the final destination.
She had never met us, yet within 1 day had completely organised a perfect trip, and presented it in such an enthusiastic way. We felt as if we lived the experience rather than just ticking off the big 5! We did so much in 10 days yet did not feel pressurised at any time. No hitches at all. Will definitely book with Steppes again."

Susan Levine

South Africa
"Everything was well organised...
...and there was no hassle in terms of logistics giving us every opportunity to enjoy this short break to the Victora Falls. On the way back, we really appreciated the very effective support provided at Johannesburg airport when in transit. Much appreciated!"
