Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in the Congo is completely different to both Uganda and Rwanda as it is lowland tropical forest, so whilst flat, it is very humid with difficult (if any) paths and long treks (anything from 2- 10 hours).  Not for the faint hearted.

Lowland Gorillas are found in Odzala National Park, Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park and Mbeli Bai. Access to Odzala is by charter flight, where there is very upmarket accommodation, but Nouabale and Mbeli are only accessible by long road journeys with very basic lodges. Travel in the Congo is full of surprises – things change at the last minute, flights can be seriously delayed or even cancelled and it is hot, hard and sweaty trekking. Specific vaccinations are also required for trekking on some parks. That aside, it still allows for one of the most thrilling wildlife adventures in the heart of Africa and is not to be missed.

  • Genuinely adventurous experience in the heart of Africa
  • Thrilling encounters with lowland gorillas and forest elephants
  • Spend time with indigenous Ba’Aka communities in forest setting

  • Going much tougher, humid and muddy with thick forests
  • Sightings trickier given environment and gorillas movements
  • Access is remote and difficult so costs higher

When To Go (bearing in mind rain is possible at ANY time!)

  • Dec to Jan - Short dry season, clear skies, but humid
  • Feb to May – Wet season , very humid, heavy showers
  • Jun to Aug -  Long dry season, still humid, but low rain
  • Sep to Nov – Short wet season, afternoon showers, still humid

Alternatively, if you are short on time and looking for an easier option gorilla trekking in Rwanda might be more suitable or for a comprehensive wildlife experience then gorilla trekking in Uganda is an option.
