Many Indian settlers were brought to Durban to work on the railway lines and in the sugar cane plantations and so their families settled here. They brought along with them a rich diversity of spiced curry flavours, mainly vegetarian. In Modern Durban, these spices have become African and the result is a dish of spicy curry served in a hollowed-out half loaf of bread. Best had as street food, Bunny Chow now comes with meat options, from Chicken to prawn, and is a popular late-night food for party-goers in the city. This meal is made to be eaten with your hands, start at the top and eat it all, including the bowl.
