Tailor-Made Holiday

Quintessential Cuba

9 days

from £2,915pp (excluding flights)

This holiday idea is ideal for those short on time but would like to get to know the quintessential Cuba.

  • Stay in Havana's top hotel
  • Explore Havana by classic car
  • Spend time at the ever popular Finca Kenia, a new kind of cuban hotel
  • Hike in the Topes de Collantes mountain range above Trinidad
  • Dance to Son and sample the magnificent rum that always flows

With direct flights into Havana, Cuba in a week is easily accomplished without being exhausting. You will also come away with an authentic and marvellous insight into this fantastic country.

Start in city of Havana, staying at the Hotel Saratoga centrally located with an unrivalled view of the Capitolio.   No visit to Havana is complete without a vintage car tour, but to really feel the city, a walking tour of Old Havana is a must. Visit the famous haunts of authors, muscians and actors alike.  A real cuban mojito will almost certainly be on the agenda for elevenses.

Then make your way to Trinidad; a mini Havana forgotten in time but is making an impressive comeback.  Faded colonial charm gives way to buzzing cafes and restaurants and private homes opened up to well-heeled visitors offering guests an (almost) boutique hotel experience.  Visit the sugar mill valley that once gave Trinidad its riches.  Walk the cobbled streets with your guide and visit the delightful museums hiding behind the peeling paint.  Explore the mountains by Russian jeep that rise up behind the town where lush foilage, tumbling waterfalls and prolific birdlife can be found.

Return to Havana for one last night. We suggest you celebrate your last evening in Havana in style.  Try our progressive dining option where you can enjoy each course in a different paladar, visit a jazz club or the Fabrica del Arte for live music and art installations.

Day 1

Fly London to Havana

Romantic, beautiful and fascinating, Havana is a must for anyone's visit to Cuba. Fortifications, colonial buildings and churches tell of a rich history, whilst a Communist regime and erosion from the sea lend a faded glory to the city. The old heart gives way to Soviet starkness, whilst the 1950s playground of Vedado, neighbours the historic mansions of Miramar. Quite simply, stunning.

Day 4

Havana to Trinidad via Bay of Pigs & Cienfuegos

Leave Havana with your driver/guide this morning for a full day tour to Trinidad, stopping on the way to explore the Bay of Pigs and Cienfuegos. It's a 2.5 hour drive to the bay, followed by a further 2 hours to Cienfuegos and a final 1.5 hour drive to Trinidad.

Bahia de Cocinos borders the Zapata Swamp, an important wetlands area of Cuba. This is also a renowned diving and snorkelling spot although the bay is best known for the failed military invasion in 1961 and the highlight of a visit has to be a tour of the small museum that gives the Cuban perspective of this hugely controversial conflict, providing a insight on the events leading up to the invasion and a clear account of the attack and its aftermath. A British built Sea Fury aircraft that was used by the Cuban military is proudly displayed in front of the museum along with a rather Soviet looking monument but you must ensure that your guide also takes you behind the museum to see the debris of US aircraft, tanks, trucks and landing craft.

Cienfuegos is a very typical Cuban port town with French colonial architecture, an interesting mudejar style palace and the Terry Theatre where Caruso and Sarah Bernhardt have both performed. The 94 hectare botanical garden welcomes visitors to a soothing setting of palms, orchids, bamboos and a myriad other tropical plants. This is Cuba's largest garden and houses 2,000 species of plants including 280 types of palms (purportedly the greatest variety found in one place anywhere in the world).

Trinidad is arguably the most beautiful town in Cuba. Said to be dozing in an 18th century time warp and where the pace of life remains as slow, it is a perfect relic of Spanish colonialism with plazas, churches, palaces and cobbled streets. Trinidad is also gateway to several Caribbean beaches, as well as and the trekking trails and sugar mills of the Escambray Mountains.

Day 5

Walking tour of Trinidad
Meet your guide for a three hour walking tour of Trinidad’s historic city centre. Your guide will talk you through the history of Trinidad by visiting its architectural high points before finishing at Bar Canchancharra for a local mojito of wild mint, honey and rum and, of course, some Cuban music.

You will be staying at Finca Kenia, Bed & Breakfast

Day 6

Truck Safari to Topes de Collantes
Ride up to the Escambray mountains in ex soviet military jeeps or trucks. Go up to Guanayara and trek trough the tropical forest of Topes. Bird watching and an opportunity for swimming at the waterfall make this a must for nature lovers. For those interested in Revolution history, lunch (included) is at the house of ''La Gallega'' who has an important friendship with Fidel Castro. (Please note that in high season the government supplier of the transport may change from private jeep transport to group truck transport, sometimes without any notification. While we do our utmost to ensure that you know which type of transport you will be using, it is not always possible due to last minute changes).

You will be staying at Finca Kenia, Bed & Breakfast

Day 7

Trinidad to Havana via Santa Clara

It's a 2 hour drive around the Escambray mountains to the city of Santa Clara, where you will stop to visit Che's memorial.

Santa Clara is known as 'Che's city' as he won the pivotal battle of the revolution here and took over the city in 1958. This led effectively to the end of Batista’s rule in Cuba. There is an interesting Museum (**closed on Mondays**) underneath the statue celebrating Che's success. Carriages from the Blindado train that was attacked by Che have been preserved and converted into a mini museum, telling the story of the battle for Santa Clara. You may also visit the mausoleum where Guevara was interred after his body was repatriated from Bolivia following the discovery of his remains in 1997.

It's a further 3 hour drive to Havana.

You will be staying at Hotel Santa Isabel, Bed & Breakfast
