A little more about Mindanao

Despite boasting jaw-dropping scenery, pure white sand beaches, tribal cultures, largely unexplored jungle and spiky mountain ranges, Mindanao remains almost entirely off most traveller’s radars.

A holiday to Mindanao really feels like you’re getting off the beaten track. The lack of tourism ensures you get a true sense of the Filipino culture.

Mindanao can be found in the most southerly group of islands and, after Luzon, is the largest island in the Philippines. The region offers an amazing holiday destination for divers and snorkelers alike. Island hopping opportunities abound and if you desire you can play Robinson Crusoe for a few days.

The islands also play host to incredible wildlife, Mindanao is home to the endangered Philippine Tarsier and Philippine Eagle, also known as the Monkey Eating Eagle. The Tarsier, at 8cm long is one of the smallest primates and is unique to Mindanao and Bohol. The Eagles habitats can be found scattered across Mindanao.

Mindanao is easily reached via a flight from Cebu in just over an hour and Manila in less than 2 hours. Road travel can be slow within the island, but there are many opportunities to travel by ferry boat.

Did you know?

A breeding pair of eagles requires from 25 to 50 miles of rain forest to survive. While they often catch prey in midair, those nesting in large trees in lowland areas search for prey on the ground. Eagles hunt a variety of animals, ranging in size from small bats to 30-pound deer!

When to go

A holiday to Eastern Mindanao will be rainy from December to March but fairly dry when the rest of the country is experiencing the wet season.
