10 days

from £2,295pp (excluding flights)

This holiday to Jordan does not miss the highlights but includes them with a twist. Head off the tourist trail and trek into Petra from less known Little Petra and spend a day hiking between lodges in the beautiful Dana Valley with birdlife, dramatic vistas and wildflowers in abundance.

  • Hike from Little Petra to Petra via an ancient Nabatean route
  • Explore the wild landscape of Wadi Rum
  • Trek through the Dana Valley terminating at the candle-lit retreat Feynan Eco Lodge
  • Learn ancient Bedouin traditions and float in the Dead Sea

Roman and Crusader History

Explore the beautifully preserved ruins of Jerash in the north of the country before travelling south on the Kings Highway via the crusader castles of Karak and Shobak.

Trekking from Little Petra to Petra

Starting at Little Petra, a less visited part of the site, hike 12 kilometres through the sandstone mountains to a high plateau before descending into the main site of Petra. There is something magical about entering the UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra on foot, via a route that far fewer access.

Wadi Rum

Spend a morning in the desert wilderness of Wadi Rum where wild landscapes hide ancient rock art and nomadic Bedouin tribes.

The Dana Valley

Dana Nature Reserve is a system of wadis and mountains which extends from the top of the Rift Valley down to the desert lowlands of Wadi Araba. Dana Village overlooks the scenic Wadi Dana and has been occupied since 4000 BC. Archaeological evidence indicates that Palaeolithic, Egyptian, Nabatean, and Roman civilisations have been drawn to the area by the fertile soil, water springs, and strategic location.

The best way to experience Dana is on foot so after a night in Dana Village embark on a full day trek through the valleys and mountains of this area, ending at Feynan Eco Lodge.

The Dead Sea

End your holiday to Jordan with time to relax at the Kempinski Ishtar, on the shores of the Dead Sea and home to the largest spa in the Middle East.

Day 2

Full Day of Sightseeing in Jerash and Ajloun
Travel to the north of the country and the site of Jerash. This city is remarkable for its unbroken chain of human population. There you will find remains from as far back as Neolithic times, but Jerash's golden age really arrived with Roman rule. Today with many of its richly embellished marble and granite structures still standing, it is acknowledged as one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world.

A short journey west through pine forests and olive groves will bring you to Ajloun and the castle of Qala'at Ar-Rabad. A fine example of Islamic architecture, the fortress dominated a wide stretch of the north Jordan Valley and protected communication routes between south Jordan and Syria. Today it is a fascinating warren of towers, chambers and galleries while its hilltop position offers staggering views of the Jordan Valley.

Day 3

Travel from Amman to Little Petra on the Kings Highway

After breakfast, take a panoramic tour of the city before driving south to Madaba, Jordan's most important Christian centre. Take a short walk to visit the Church of St George and its intricate mosaic map of the Holy Land. Continue to Mt Nebo for superb panoramic views of the Jordan valley and towards the Holy Land. Drive through the desert highway to arrive at Little Petra.

Hike from Little Petra to Petra
Arrive at Little Petra to begin a 12km guided trek into the main site of Petra, walking towrds the lesser trodden "Back Door entrance".

Walk down through Wadi Ghurab amidst sandstone mountains, which guard the approach to Petra. This track follows a Nabatean route out of the valley along a natural rock terrace which narrows slightly before reaching a hidden plateau high above the impressive chasm of Wadi Siyyagh. Just beyond, carved into the cliff face, the impressive Monastery comes into view. Walk down 850 steps into ancient Petra arriving at the awe-inspiring Treasury. Walk back through the ancient Siq to your hotel.

The hike takes around 3-4 hours and is moderately difficult. You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness.

Day 4

Petra Sightseeing
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra, accompanied by a private local guide.

Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in south Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. From here they dominated the trade routes of ancient Arabia, levying tolls and sheltering caravans laden with Indian spices and silks, African ivory and animal hides. The kingdom endured for centuries and became widely admired for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels. By the 16th century however, Petra was completely lost, and remained so for 300 years until it was rediscovered by a Swiss traveller, Burckhardt, in 1812. View the 'Treasury', Roman-style 3,000-seat theatre, and numerous temples, facades, tombs, baths and funerary halls.
