Rowena Loverance is a specialist in Byzantine art and the cultures of Late Antiquity, with particular expertise in sculpture, mosaics and icons. She has excavated in Greece and Cyprus and has led many tours across the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East, exploring the artistic and religious traditions that shaped the region.

She worked for over 20 years at the British Museum, where she was Head of E-learning and created the acclaimed Ancient Civilisations series of educational websites. She is currently a Visiting Research Fellow at King’s College London.

Rowena is the author of Byzantium, an illustrated history of the empire, and Christian Art (both British Museum Press), a wide-ranging study of sacred art across cultures. She has contributed extensively to scholarship on Byzantine and early Christian art and is writing a handbook of Byzantine sculpture for Cambridge University Press.

A regular member of the Executive Committee of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies, she has chaired its publications committee and remains closely involved in advancing the field.
