My Favourite Countries

  • Colombia
  • Ecuador
  • Brazil
  • Chile
  • Peru
  • Bolivia
  • Galapagos Islands

I’ve worked in the travel industry for over 20 years, half of which has been with Steppes Travel. I have travelled to many parts of the Americas; highlights include kayaking in the Amazon jungle, travelling across the vast desert expanse of southern Bolivia, snorkelling with sealions in the Galapagos Islands and watching a La Boca soccer game in Buenos Aires.

Wonders & Wilderness in Chile

As welcome signs go they don’t come much bigger or more impressive than the Andes Mountains, appearing out of nowhere, rugged and gnarly as though they have been squeezed out of the flat Pampas surrounding them. Although I have been lucky enough to visit Chile before, the sight of the Andes never fails to excite. Exploring new places is always inspiring; this trip was to bring a mix of the well-known Torres del Paine, to the remote wilderness of the Carretera Austral in the Aysen region.

Wonders of the Galapagos

‘This is a good spot to find turtles,’ Bolivar our guide said as we adjusted our masks and put our flippers on, ‘but the water might be cold’. Those were the last words I heard as I slid from the panga into the water. He wasn’t wrong on either front. Submerging into the bay, my lungs tightened and breath become shorter, wow, this water was more than cold.

The Quiet Side of the Sacred Valley

Having visited the Sacred Valley 10 years ago, the feeling I remember was of being whisked along with other tourists going to all the must-see sites. This time I did things differently, I still went to many of the highlights in the valley but just timed my visits well to avoid the busy times, had a private guide giving the flexibility to stop when wanted and travelled at times on foot and by bike.

My Most Memorable Experiences

Explore Maras and Moras

Travel to the dug-out amphitheatre-style Inca ruins of Maras and Moray, the Sacred Valley’s lesser known archaeological sites.

Night Walking in the Amazon

Walking along narrow trails of the might Amazon Rainforest gave me the sense of truly in one of Earth’s most remote spots. Using torch light, the night safari brought millipedes, frogs, tarantulas, ants, stick insects and many other inhabitants to my attention.

Hike Torres del Paine

Trek amongst granite peaks in one of South America’s wildest places, Torres del Paine National Park.

Sacred Valley Mountain Biking

Brave a mountain bike and journey through the twists and turns of the undulating valley landscape.

Discover Machu Picchu

Journey to the iconic UNESCO site of Machu Picchu, either on foot via the Inca Trail or by rail journey.

Canoe the Amazonian Rivers

Weave through the rivers of the Amazon Rainforest in a guide-steered canoe, looking out for hundreds of species of birds as well as giant river otters and lurking caiman.
