My love for Asia began with living there. Based in Vietnam and then Malaysia, I also explored the surrounding regions before eventually finding my way back home via China and the Trans-Siberian railway. At Steppes Travel, I get to share that love for Asia every day, helping clients experience the places I know best as if they were locals themselves.

Both languages and diving have shaped the way I travel. I studied Spanish at university, and speaking a second language has deepened my connection to the people and cultures I encounter. I’m also the only PADI Divemaster on the Steppes Travel team, with some of my favourite dives taking place among the technicolour reefs of Raja Ampat and the drop-offs of Palau. These passions help me create itineraries that go beyond the usual sightseeing, immersing clients in the rhythms of local life and the beauty found just below the surface.

A classic itinerary through Southeast Asia

If it’s your first time travelling in Southeast Asia, or you simply want to take in the region’s greatest hits, this itinerary through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos is the one I’d recommend.

Start in northern Vietnam, sailing through the karst-studded waters of Lan Ha Bay and wandering the lively streets of Hanoi. Continue to Hue and Hoi An for imperial history, street food and riverside charm, before flying south to the bustle of Ho Chi Minh City.

From there, cross into Cambodia to explore the floating villages of Tonle Sap and the majestic temples of Angkor. Finally, end your journey in laid-back Luang Prabang, where saffron-robed monks, golden temples and misty mountains create a timeless backdrop.

An itinerary for the trailblazers in Raja Ampat

This sailing itinerary through Raja Ampat offers true edge-of-the-map exploration. You’ll explore the far-flung southern reaches of the archipelago – Misool and beyond – where jungle-covered karsts rise from turquoise seas and coral reefs burst with life found nowhere else on Earth.

Fly into Sorong, before transferring to Wasai to your liveaboard and heading into the marine-protected zones around Misool. Each day brings something different: snorkelling with manta rays, diving vibrant reefs, kayaking through hidden lagoons or hiking to viewpoints where there’s no one else around. Expect few other boats, exceptional guides and a deep sense of stillness and space.

After 10 days exploring at sea, return to Wasai to say goodbye to the crew before your onward journey back to Sorong.

The trip I’d love to do in Australia

This is a trip I’ve long wanted to take, an overland journey through the vast, rugged landscapes of Australia’s northwest. The Kimberley fascinates me: remote, dramatic and deeply rooted in Aboriginal culture, with stories etched into its rocks that predate recorded history.

I’d start in Darwin and follow the road east to Bamurru Plains, skimming across floodplains by airboat to spot crocodiles before heading into Arnhem Land to explore rock art sites guided by Traditional Owners. From there, I’d head into the heart of the Kimberley, hiking through striped gorges in Purnululu and swimming beneath outback waterfalls.

Next would be the coastal town of Broome, to wander the miles of glorious beaches and watch the sun set over rust-red cliffs. I’d end my journey at Ningaloo Reef, swimming alongside whale sharks in clear, shallow waters.

The Magic of Mongolia

Mongolia, a vast yet glorious country. The gers are simple yet plenty. The food abundant and fresh. This doesn’t even start to describe the nomadic families I met nor the pleasure from riding on horseback through the steppe where Genghis Khan made his name. I am desperate to return and spend more time in this fascinating destination. Next time, it’s the eagles that I seek.

A Personal Story through the Street Food of Tokyo

Fish. I have no problem with them in the water but when they are on my plate, I admit, I struggle slightly. During the street food tour in Japan, I surprised myself and pushed myself out of my comfort zone. It wasn’t solely fish on the menu of course. No pun intended. We also ate yakitori, okonomiyaki and cherry blossom flavoured ice cream; everything is possible in Japan, even in their cuisine.
