After my degree in Fine Art I didn’t really know what career I wanted or what path I would take. The only thing I knew is that having spent a summer in America it had given me the desire to explore and see as many places as possible before becoming a grown up and entering the real world.

I had always wanted to go to Australasia, and it wasn’t until someone turned to me and said ‘’what are you waiting for’’ that I thought… what am I waiting for? I went home that day and bought a one-way ticket to New Zealand and three weeks later I left. I think fondly of the feeling that I had when I arrived, not knowing what adventures I would have and what people I would meet along the way, the pure excitement of the unknown. Returning over a year later having visited many countries in South East Asia on my route home I was lucky enough to get a role within the travel industry. It was then that I discovered that I could enter the real world doing something that I love and talking about travel every single day.

Kayaking with dolphins in Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand

On my most recent trip to New Zealand, we were kayaking up in Marlborough Sounds which is north of the South Island. Suddenly one of the guys yelled out ‘’Amy, Amy, look’’ then a dolphin just pops up out of the water next to my kayak. I scream and my heart races, how lucky am I?

There are two and they spend almost an hour with us. We are the only people in the entire bay, just here with two dolphins jumping out of the water and almost putting on a display for us. I splash my hands in the water, making noises remembering what had been mentioned from my time in Kaikoura. Once again, as you can imagine I must have looked like a lunatic. But it worked, when it was time to go back to the accommodation to get our water taxi I hung back from the group and paddled in. ‘’Amy, look behind you’’. They were following me in… wow, this is great… I must be a dolphin whisperer.

Helicopter over Franz Josef Glacier

Franz Josef heli-hike

I wake up hoping for blue skies outside and no wind. Today is the day I am booked in to take a heli-hike on Franz Josef Glacier.

Knowing how frequently these can cancel due to weather, I have already prepared myself for the disappointment of cancellation during the small window of opportunity I have in my busy itinerary (something I always advise my clients to avoid). I draw my curtains slowly, amazingly, not a cloud in the sky, how lucky am I?

Seeing Orangutans in the wild in Danum Valley

“Hope to see everything and expect to see nothing.”

Our guide at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Ned, spoke these few words to us when we first arrived and this phrase stuck with me throughout my stay. I kept replaying it in my mind, over and over again. Some people travel with a checklist of what they want to see and then get disappointed when they don’t get to see it. I try to travel with an open mind and take in everything I see as a gift, a blessing, a wonder.
