Tailor-Made Holiday

Papua New Guinea Uncovered

13 days

from £4,900pp (excluding flights)

This holiday to PNG offers a wonderful overview of the country’s main highlights covering varied and fascinating landscapes and cultures.

  • Dive in the fjords of Tufi, a virtually unexplored underwater world.
  • Learn about the complex traditional society of the Melpa people
  • Spot crocodiles and bird of paradise as you navigate the jungle fringed waterways of the Karawari River.
  • Explore the Sepik region where tribal art and village rituals thrive.

The trip begins with time on Cape Nelson visiting the impressive fjords that shape this area. Spectacular enough above water it is the underwater world that is really magical and diving here is a wonderfully unusual experience. Inland to the Highland mountains where you will spend time learning about the cultures and traditions of the Melpa people before ending your journey in the lowland rainforests and rivers of the Sepik region. Here the traditional mode of transport is the pole dugout canoe and traditional village life continues largely unchanged. The rivers here are also home to bountiful bird life.

The choice of accommodation in PNG is fairly limited and this holiday idea includes some of the best lodges on offer. Tufi Resort with incredible views of the tropical fjords, Rondon Ridge, perched high on Mount Kuta in the Highlands and Karawari Lodge, a remote and beautiful spot only accessible by river or a small airstrip.

There are many options to extend this suggested holiday including a three night stay on the tranquil island of Loloata. Many places in PNG are only accessible by air. Steppes Travel can organised private helicopter charters if required. Helicopters allow remote access to otherwise impenetrable regions of this country.

PNG has an extremely variable climate and the weather can vary from area to area, however in general the best time to visit PNG is from May to November which is during the dry season.

The coast of Tufi's peninsula, or Cape Nelson as it was named by the British, is a place where sea and mountains meet. A paradise accessed only by boat or air. Gnarled green fingers stretch out into the sea creating fjords of hidden surprises - technically they are rais as they were created by volcano as opposed to ice. These rais give the region a very particular fingerprint of turquoise coral bays, surrounded by steep ridges covered in rainforest and kunai grasslands.
