El Valle

Why Visit El Valle

Just driving into the valley is an experience - the majestic mountains, swathed in blues and greens are simply breath-taking. El Valle de Anton is a magical place for a weekend away from Panama's lowland heat or for those keen on the outdoors, ornithology and photography.

About El Valle

Perched at an altitude of some 2,500 ft, El Valle is the largest inhabited volcanic crater in the world. It is a fertile volcanic valley filled with bright flowers, unique square trees and the endangered golden frogs. The vegetation is mostly cloud-forest and thus the flora and fauna in this region is prolific.

  • Hike to the top of La India Dormida to see La Piedra Pintada; petroglyphs carved into a boulder, evidence of the Pre-Colombian era but still not deciphered
  • Visiting on a weekend will coincide with their famous arts and crafts market
  • Try a Zip lining adventure, a mud bath and a dip in a thermal pool
  • Visit the tiny, but no less interesting, museum - full of pre-Columbian artefacts found in the El Valle area
  • Stay at Canopy Lodge for superb birding and photography experiences
