2019

LATA award for our Chile article

In May 2019, Vanessa Humphrey won the LATA award for ‘Self Published Feature of the Year’ for her article on Chile: A Passage from the Land of Salt and Stars to the “End of the World”  in our Steppes Traveller Magazine.

Steppes Travel sets up home in Cirencester

With the company growing and establishing destination teams a move to Cirencester was on the cards.

2018

Innovation Award with Vamoos

In 2018 we won the Driving Innovation award from Vamoos.

2017

Maiden Antarctic Cruise Charter with Sir Ranulph Fiennes

In January 2017, our first Steppes Travel Antarctic private charter departed from Ushuaia on an epic 27-day voyage around South Georgia, the Falklands and the Antarctic peninsular.

2009

The Traveller

Steppes Travel acquired the Traveller which was originally the travel arm of the British Museum.  We continued to specialise in archaeological tours using British Museum curators to lead them and it formed the foundation of our cultural, expert-led group tours that we have today.

2004

15th Anniversary

By this point, we had three arms of the business – Steppes East, Steppes Africa and Steppes Latin America.

2000

Justin Wateridge joins Steppes Travel

In November 2000, Justin Wateridge applies for a job at Steppes Travel. Hired!

1999

Foundation of Discovery Initiatives

Established by Julian Matthews, the concept behind Discovery was that around the world there were small wildlife research centres each with accommodation, vehicles and scientists. This then became the cornerstone of our wildlife group tours today.

1997

Steppes Africa is born

After purchasing the Art of Travel, an African safari company based in Battersea, London, we begin to expand our destination portfolio for our clients.

1988

The birth of Steppes

Nick makes his first trip to Russia, specifically to the Altai mountains in 1988. Upon returning to the UK he set about to create Steppes Travel, a travel company that can offer discerning travellers the opportunity to fulfil their curiosity of the world.
