Nicaragua - An Extraordinary Journey

From remote jungles to the colonial city of Granada and the Caribbean Island of Little Corn

15 days

from £4,105pp (excluding flights)

Carpe Diem. There has never been a more appropriate phrase for this extraordinary journey along the Rio San Juan through the remote jungles of Nicaragua.  The much debated canal to rival that of Panama is signed off and construction is underway. This beautiful tract of land will soon fall victim to this new age trade route.

  • Travel along the Rio San Juan and visit old tombs and 17th century fortresses
  • Sail the Indio River flanked by thick virgin rainforest teeming with wildlife and explore the pristine Indio Maiz Biological Reserve
  • Visit the Corn Islands once a haven for buccaneers but now the ultimate place to unwind
  • Relax on Lake Nicaragua and stay in the colonial town of Granada

Marking the southern border with Costa Rica, the Rio San Juan was travelled by Lord Nelson and Mark Twain. It was one of the most important trading routes in Central America and once a notorious pirate highway. This trip takes you on a swashbuckling adventure following the rivers that carve a path through impenetrable jungle to the Atlantic coast. Still, today this untouched splendour can be found nowhere else north of the Amazon, but not for much longer.

Explore the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve, 3000 square kilometres of dense rainforest sheltering many species of wildlife including the elusive manatee, macaws, toucans, monkeys and big cats. Hike forest trails and visit the abandoned settlement of Greytown. Spend time in the Corn Islands with a fascinating history of slavery, pirates and British rule. Today you will find white beaches, clear warm waters and a Caribbean flair. The journey concludes relaxing at Jicaro Lodge on Lake Nicaragua where today’s more modern amenities offer kayaking and paddle boarding and dhow sailing before a last night in the colonial town of Granada.
