Join the I AM WATER team for a week of freediving and yoga off the Mozambican coast. Learn the basics amidst idyllic tropical surroundings. Spend mornings swimming beside the region’s playful dolphins, before returning ashore for a dose of relaxing yoga, looking out over the beautiful Mozambizan waters. 

Fly into Durban, and after a night spent at the iconic Oyster Box Hotel, drive up the coast and into Mozambique. Head to the Ponta D’Ouro area, renowned for the pods of dolphins that dot the waters off its beaches. Here, spend six nights at a secluded beach house – perfect for ocean adventures and relaxed sunset yoga classes. Accompanied by impassioned experts, freedive and frolic in the warm waters of the southern Indian Ocean.

FREEDIVING AND DOLPHINS

Begin each day at dawn. Set out early, in search of dolphins, who regard this secluded stretch of sand-splashed coastline as their playground. Spend time training in readiness for encounters with these friendly mammals. Practice deep diving sessions along a weighted rope, journeying deeper on each occasion.

Enter the water in the morning, before these playful creatures are distracted by thoughts of food and sleep. Swim beside, beneath and above them – diving down through the warm, azure waters of Mozambique. Regardless of your freediving ability, close encounters are guaranteed, with the dolphins eager to interact with visitors to their aquatic domain.

YOGA RETREAT.

Time beneath the water is exhilarating, but tiring. To ease the burden of such an active schedule, yoga plays a big part in this trip. Afternoon and sunset yoga sessions take place on the pool deck, accompanied by stunning views of the shimmering ocean.

As the sun falls below the horizon and the evening yoga class ends, dinner begins. Dine on an array of wholesome, healthy cooking that Victoria Dudley, a Cape Town chef, has specially prepared.

After diving and before sunset, there is time to explore, relax and unwind. Snack by the swimming pool, return to the sea or read beside the pool. For those who want to venture further afield, there is a nearby lake where hippos and crocodiles can be found, as well as a colourful local market.

MAMOLI ORPHANAGE

I AM WATER works with the children of the nearby Momoli Orphanage, and during the week there will be a visit to this invaluable project. Once terrified of the power of the sea, the children have learned – with the help of I AM WATER – to embrace the majestic vastness of the ocean. Now they swim and snorkel with carefree abandon, learning to explore – and therefore respect – the world beneath the waves.

HANLI PRINSLOO

Hanli is an 11 times South African Freediving Record Holder who has taught freediving to over 500 students. She is the founder of the I AM WATER Foundation, which focuses on ocean conservation through human experience. Hanli is also a film-maker, avid ocean adventurer and certified yoga instructor. The freediving instructors she leads have taught freediving around the world, alongside working with top athletes, celebrities, and individuals with aquatic phobias.

Day 1

The suggested group outbound flight for this tour is:

South African Airways SA235, scheduled to depart London Heathrow at 19:00 on Friday 9th March, arriving into Johannesburg airport at 07:05 on Saturday 10th March. Connect with the South African Airways flight SA539 departing Johannesburg at 08:45, arriving into Durban at 09:50 on Saturday 10th March.

An arrival transfer will be provided to connect with this flight. You will be met at the arrivals hall by a member of our local team.

The starting point for the group is the Oyster Box Hotel in Durban. You will meet with the rest of the group for a short briefing, timings will be confirmed in your final documentation.

For those making their own way to Durban and not taking the suggested group flight, the starting point for the group is the Oyster Box hotel in Durban. Please speak to one of our team should you need help organising an arrival transfer.

The port of Durban on Kwa-Zulu Natal's east coast is a true melting pot of cultures with a fascinating history. Colonial and Indian influences are visible throughout the city where the local dish is still curry.

With a sub-tropical climate, Durban's sandy beaches are alive with activity with surfers riding the warm Indian Ocean waves and joggers enjoying the great promenade.

Day 2

Drive from Durban to Ponta D'Ouro


Transfer by private vehicle from Durban, over the border, to Ponta D'Ouro in southern Mozambique. The total journey will take approximately five hours.

Yoga and Preparation
Start each day with a superfood smoothie and coffee. After freediving in the morning, spend time practising yoga on the beautiful ocean-view deck. As well as freediving in search of dolphins, spend time deep diving as part of your training. These sessions - swimming down, following a rope - prepare you for meeting the animals.

A more in-depth yoga class with take place on the pool deck at sunset. This will be followed by dinner, prepared by a chef Victoria Dudley, from Cape Town. All meals are included and will be healthy and wholesome food conducive to yoga and freediving practice.

Day 4

Freediving and Dolphins
Freediving and Dolphins

Four of the days will be spent diving in the open sea, both training freediving along a rope and cruising the coast looking for dolphins to swim with. It will also be the perfect time to take part in a breathing session to prepare your lungs and body for deep breaths and time underwater, learning to control your breathing and slow your heart-rate. You will be offered breath-hold training on land, as well as in the villa's swimming pool.

Swimming with dolphins is best during the morning, as they are at their most playful during this time. Later in the day, they tend to be more interested in hunting, travelling or sleeping. Therefore, freediving days start early, with the group usually returning to the house around 11:00.

In the afternoon, as well as yoga, there will be free time, with snacks around the swimming pool, body surfing or swimming in the sea in front of the house.

If you wish to, there is the opportunity to become certified in either Level 1 (beginners) or Level 2 (advanced) freediving.

Other Activities
On the non-diving day you can either enjoy free time around the beach house, or drive to a nearby lake where hippos and crocodile can be found. Alternatively, there is a lovely local market to explore or you could take part in a surf lesson.

Meet Local Children
During the week, there will also be the opportunity to spend time with local children. In recent years, I AM WATER have been working with the children from the community, teaching them to overcome their fears of the ocean. Part of this has involved taking them on swimming and snorkelling adventures in the waves

Peter Marshall
World class swimmer, ocean life guard, free diver and holder of numerous records in competitive swimming, Peter Marshall is happier in water than on land. Having the strength to move through water like few others, Peter is at his most fulfilled when filming the unique underwater world.

Together with the I AM WATER team he has swam with and filmed manta rays, whale sharks, sperm and blue whales, numerous species of sharks, dolphins and a myriad spectacular underwater landscapes all over the world. He takes great pleasure in introducing his second home to our clients.

Hanli Prinsloo
Hanli Prinsloo is the South African freediving champion and ocean conservationist who has lived her life in or near water. Hanli is joined by a team of top watermen and women and world-class photographers to capture and share our ‘Last Wilderness’.

With a competitive freediving background and a childhood spent with her horse whisperer father, Hanli has a keen sense of interacting with large creatures. Her deep respect and love for her ocean friends has led her to dedicate her life to ocean conservation through human experience. Through her I AM WATER Ocean Conservation Trust Hanli takes those who do not culturally or financially have access to the sea to experience the world beneath the waves. Through ‘The Last Wilderness’ Hanli and the I AM WATER team get to share the great creatures of our oceans with those who cannot experience these majestic creatures first hand.
