Taroudant, Ouarzazate & The Berber Towns

Why Visit

A visit to Southern Morocco will take you into the heart of the Berber peoples land and some of the country’s most dramatic landscapes.

About taroudant, ouarzazate & the berber towns

The north and the south of Morocco are separated by the Atlas Mountains. Whereas in the north you will find the whitewashed Imperial city of Fez and landscapes of olive trees and rolling countryside, as you progress southwards across the snow-capped mountains the scenery changes from cedar forests to dusty pink Berber villages, palmeraies, imposing Kasbahs and the beginning of the Sahara.

Located in southern Morocco are the oasis towns of Ouarzazate and Skoura, both of which offer a nice base from which to expore the area including Todra gorge and the Draa and Dades Valleys. Also Taroudant, often referred to as the Marrakech of 50 years ago, this traditional Berber market town offers a much less visited and more laid back option than some of the other cities. With its majestic gold, pink and orange tinted circuit of high walls, Taroudant is half citadel and half oasis.

  • Cross high passes travelling through spectacular mountain scenery
  • Explore the many Kasbahs dotting the landscape, some crumbling and some renovated and some the backdrop for numerous famous films!
  • Visit Atlas film studios in Ouarzazate, famed with producing a host of Hollywood films including Gladiator and Laurence of Arabia to name a few
  • Explore the souqs of Taroudant, with a strong tradition of local craft

Beyond the obvious

Cross the Tichka or Tizi-n’Test pass in springtime when the spring flowers are at their most beautiful.
