Just three hours flying time away, Morocco is the nearest country to the UK that can offer a true glimpse of the exotic. With several daily flights direct to Marrakech with 'no frills' airlines, a holiday to Morocco has never been easier or cheaper. Perfect for either a long weekend of pampered luxury or a more extended holiday exploring Roman ruins or sampling the hospitality of isolated Berber villages. Morocco is one of our favourite destinations.
Why we like Morocco
For a taste of the exotic, luxurious indulgence, incredible cuisine, amazing shopping opportunities, ancient ruins and beautiful scenery, all a short flight away.
What to expect on your Moroccan holiday
So near to Europe and yet so undeniably Arab, Morocco cannot be classified in one easy sentence. The bustle of the souqs, the clack of backgammon in the coffee houses, the water sellers, overloaded donkeys and isolated Berber villages set high in the valleys of the Atlas Mountains are all essentially North African.
Marrakech, with its charming old quarter, street entertainers and bustling market stalls, is the starting point of most holidays to Morocco. Driving in Morocco is easy and car hire is a perfect way to explore other areas. These should include Fez, the best example of a medieval medina in North Africa, or the small fishing port of Essaouira with its white washed walls and turquoise shutters. For the more energetic, there is good trekking to be had in the Atlas Mountains, where the Berber villages are a reminder of a simpler lifestyle.
Some ideas for a Moroccan holiday
- Walk or trek in the Atlas Mountains with Berber guides and donkeys.
- Wander the labyrinthine alleys of the medina in Fez.
- Rent a private villa for a long weekend.
- Travel south into the Sahara and spend a night out in the desert.
- Self-drive is easy in Morocco. Hire a car and travel at your own speed.
- Transport yourself back to Roman times amidst the ruins and mosaics of Volubilis.
- Marvel at the craftsmanship and sheer size of Casablanca's Hassan II Mosque.
Beyond the ordinary
Overnight in the desert in a luxury desert camp followed by an early morning hot-air balloon traverse of the Erg Chegaga desert.
OUR MOROCCO EXPERTISE
We began selling Morocco some twenty years ago when there were two flights a week and one half decent hotel in Marrakech. Over the years we have returned time and time again, watching it change and mature. Katie and Kate have explored all the main sites and much of the Atlas Mountains. They have some interesting ideas for a holiday to Morocco, whether it be for a short city break, a relaxing villa holiday or an adventure combining city, coast, mountains and desert.
