Tailor-Made Holiday

Mexico - Whale Sharks and Cenote Diving

8 days

from £3,795pp (excluding flights)

There are some wonderful diving and snorkelling opportunities to be had in Mexico, but there are three very special scenarios that we have pulled together to provide a unique marine based holiday whilst taking in some of the highlights of Mexico's Caribbean coast.

  • Swim with gentle giants
  • Dive the underwater sculpture park - the largest in the world
  • Embark on a totally unique experience of diving in ancient cenotes
  • Explore the Maya ruins of Tulum and the Sian Kaan Biosphere

Flying from the UK is as easy as a direct flight to Cancun with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. On arrival you will transfer directly to the laid-back island of Isla Mujeres which between June and early September is the best location to swim with Whale Sharks.  Here you will have the opportunity to get into the water with the world's largest fish and spend a few hours swimming with these gentle giants.

Isla Mujeres is also home to the largest sculpture museum.   Dive this fasinating national park where sculptures submerged at different depths have become artificial reefs teeming with marine life.

Returning to the mainland your guide will take you south of the Riviera Maya to Tulum.  Tulum is one of the most sort after holiday locations in Mexico. Often gracing the pages of glossy magazines and in high demand, there are plenty of beautiful boutique hotels dotted along its white sand beach opening their doors to a fashionable set.

Perched on a craggy cliff overlooking the jade like sea, the ruins of Tulum are well worth exploration. A visit to the Sian Kaan Biosphere is a fun day out with opportunity to view a variety of flora and fauna that have made the waterways of this reserve their home. Sian Kaan is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico.

The Yucatan Peninsula is also home to an incredible underground river system accessed by cenotes. The cenotes provide fantastic swimming opportunities but are also the start of a phenomenal diving experience through caves filled with water, so clear, you would think it air.

Any qualified diver could participate in this holiday idea, but if you don't dive, all these activities can be arranged for snorkellers and swimmers alike.

Day 4

Drive from Isla Mujeres to Tulum (Road Journey)

Private transfer by yacht back to Cancun where your guide will meet you and drive you to Tulum.

Tulum Ruins and Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve
Privately guided tour of the striking beachfront ruins of Tulum. Tulum was once an important port, trading mainly in turquoise and jade and one of the few that was protected by a fortress wall. Made from limestone, the wall runs for 784 metres around three sides and is some seven metres thick. The Temple of the Frescoes is one of the better preserved buildings and where you can view painted murals.

Continue to the Sian Kaan Biosphere. Explore by boat the channels, mangroves and estuaries that harbour a unique marine wilderness. Sian Kaan is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico and home to a diverse population of birds and mammals. you will also visit a small archaeological site that illustrates the extensive Mayan trading routes.

Tulum, like neighbouring Playa del Carmen has found its way into the tourism sector from the slow paced life of the fishing trade. Today Tulum is a trendy beach resort for the affluent and elite, with many a Hollywood star choosing Tulum as their holiday destination. Shabby chic and barefoot luxury is the name of the game at the many boutique hotels on offer. Perched upon a cliff top overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Pre-Columbian site of Tulum has arguably the most stunning setting of all the Mayan ruins and is an interesting contrast to the inland archaeological complexes. With substantial 5m high ramparts on three sides and a watchtower, its believed that in its heyday Tulum was an important port town.

Day 5

Diving Sacred Mayan Cenotes
Beneath the Yucatan Peninsula is an incredible undergournd fresh water river system accessed only by caverns and caves. The Mayans knew these mysterious and magic places as Cenotes. It is possible to experience this wonderful hidden world by taking one of the most unique dives of your life. Diving feels more like flying, as the water is so clear it's more like air. Navigate through the caverns full of stalagmites, stalactites and millenary columns.

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
