Visit the sanctuary at night for an incredible light show amongst the conifer trees as the mating fireflies turn into dancing stars.

Oaxaca

The central valley of Oaxaca is a fascinating area to explore.  From grasshopper tastings to 2000 year old trees, ancient archaeological sites and traditional artisan crafts, the options are endless.  Lunch with a local Zapotec family and visit a mezcal distillery.

Puerto Escondido

A charismatic port town on the Pacific Coast offers beach glamour and is a surf mecca.  Life here is unhurried.  A lagoon to the west attracts birdwatchers and fishing enthusiasts whereas the surf is ideal for beginners and pros alike, as well as home to the Mexican Pipeline, considered Mexico’s best wave.  Experience the Hotel Escondido bringing rustic glamour and a sophisticated beach stay in 16 beachfront bungalows.  Sip margaritas by the pool with views to the ocean before moving to the underground bar for night-time revelry.

Day 1

Fly London to Mexico City

When the Aztec observed an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a snake, they believed this was a sign to stop their wanderings and build an empire. Today Mexico City is one of the largest capitals in the world, a city of contrasts and one that encapsulates all that is Mexican - it is vibrant, overwhelming, captivating and bursting with energy.

Take to the skies with this opportunity to get a birds-eye view of the pyramids at Teotihuacán. This is a rare chance to see the sunrise over the Valley of Teotihuacán on a private hot air balloon ride experience. Very early start from Mexico City to arrive at Teotihuacan for a 6am flight. You will be in the air for approximately forty minutes, taking in the sheer size of the religious and ceremonial centre of the Aztecs and looking out over vistas of the surrounding valley. After the flight, breakfast will be served at a local restaurant before continuing on foot for a privately guided tour of the archaeological site, famous for the world's 3rd and 4th largest pyramidal structures, the enormous Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. Your guide will enhance your experience with expert explanations of the importance of the site and its place in the rich history of Mexico's many layers of pre-Columbian civilizations.

On return to the city, visit Monte Cristo Hacienda for lunch before a tour of the historic city centre with visits to the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Zocalo and if time permits, the National Palace Murals.

Day 3

Market Tour and Cooking Class at Casa Jacarandas
Accompanied by two locally renowned cooks, embark on a fascinating cultural and culinary experience in the heart of one of Mexico City's most artistic and dynamic neighbourhoods - La Roma.

The day begins with a visit to Medellin market. There will be the opportunity to taste authentic Mexican tortillas made with traditional Nixtamal dough and learn and how this vitamin rich food has spanned the test if time throughout Mesoamerica. Walk the market to discover the colours, aromas and traditions of an authentic Mexico. Interact with local merchants, taste spices, cheeses, ice cream and regional coffee. After tasting, select with the chefs the best ingredients for your menu and make the short walk to Casa Jacaranda, a beautifully restored mansion for a hands on cooking lesson. Generations old culinary secrets and techniques are shared during this three hour lesson. Finally sit down to your three-course menu and with wine pairings and a Mezcal tasting - the Oaxacan tipple.

Out of Hours visit to the National Anthropology Museum

Day 4

Transfer tour to Puebla, via Cholula

Head out of Mexico City this morning on a full day transfer/tour that will take in the pretty town of Cholula en-route to Puebla. Cholula stands at the foot of what appears to be an earthen hill that is, in fact, the largest pyramid ever built, covering over 46 acres and spanning an incredible 405 metres on each side. After taking the city during the Spanish Conquest, Hernan Cortes vowed that it would be rebuilt with a Christian church to replace each of the old pagan temples. After exploring Cholula, continue for a guided tour of Puebla, "village of angels", that sits in the shadow of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes. Puebla was also nicknamed The Shrine of Americas due to its architectural beauty. There are a handful of excellent museums in Puebla but try and leave some time to walk the streets and appreciate the beauty of this historic town.

Few Mexican cities preserve the Spanish imprint as faithfully as Puebla. Hundreds of churches combine with thousands of other colonial buildings, many adorned with the hand-painted tiles for which the city is famous. Founded by the Spanish in 1531 the city quickly became an important Catholic religious centre designed to overshadow the nearby pre-Hispanic centre of Cholula. Still strongly Catholic and conservative today, the inhabitants of Puebla have a reputation among other Mexicans for snobbishness. Nevertheless it is a lively city with much to see and do. Puebla is also famous for its fine pottery but moreover is the home of 'mole', a spicy chocolate sauce usually served with chicken or turkey. Well worth a try whilst in Puebla.

Day 5

Firefly Sanctuary Evening Experience
During the summer months late June to early August, it is possible to experience a unique wildlife spectacle just outside Puebla. Approximately 1.5 hrs away is the Nanacamilpa Sanctuary, where each year, fireflies come to mate creating an incredible scene. Your guide will walk you into the forests where you will take a seat amongst the conifers to wait for nightfall and the twinkling of lights to begin. Soon the forest will come alive with a marvellous visual chorus of synchronised lights. Walk along the trails only illuminated by the fireflies before returning to your hotel around 11.30pm.

Day 6

Drive from Puebla to Oaxaca (Road Journey)

Capital of Oaxaca State, this is one of the prettiest towns in Mexico and was deservedly nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Trust Site in 1987. Founded by the Spanish in 1521 on a pre-existing Zapotec and Mixtec settlement, the town gracefully combines colonial charm with its ancient pre-Hispanic roots.

Imposing churches, airy plazas and hidden convents blend with busy markets, traditional craft stalls and local music makers. Relax in the zocalo and enjoy a locally produced Mezcal while absorbing the feel of this vibrant and colourful town.

Oaxaca is also one of Mexico's major handicrafts and arts centres with a vast range on offer guaranteed to keep even the most dedicated souvenir shopper happy.

Continue to the valley of Oaxaca visiting the small towns of San Dionisio and Ocotepec and Santiago Matatlan. These towns are premium mezcal producers with authentic distilleries. Far from the tourist track, the mezcalerias that you will visit use the traditional copper still and pre-Columbian clay in their production. Taste the different agave types of Mezcal such as Tobala, Espadin Cuishe and Tobaciche.

Day 8

Full Day Monte Alban, Teotilan del Valle and Zapotec Lunch
This morning take a privately guided tour of the archaeological site of Monte Alban. Monte Alban was the capital city of the Zapotec nation and one of the first and most populated Meso-American cities during its peak. Located in the centre of the Oaxaca Valley, Monte Alban exercised political, economic and ideological control over other communities in the valley and surrounding mountains.

Continue to Teotitilan de Valle and visit a local family who specialize in spinning and weaving the famous Oaxacan rugs, highly prized by collectors for their use of natural, organic dyes. You will have the opportunity to spin wool and see silkworm production used for wonderful handmade scarves. All dyes are natural made from various fruits and vegetables, and even an insect called the cochineal. You will be able to witness an amazing process that dates back hundreds of years. It takes six months to make one rug.

Oaxaca is also famous worldwide for its regional cuisine. Today a special lunch is included today with a Zapotec family in their home. This is a wonderful way to sample the local delicacies and learn more about the Zapotec culture.
