Tailor-Made Holiday

Mexico - Copper Canyon and Baja California

13 days

from £2,995pp (excluding flights)

There are few secrets left in Mexico, but the Copper Canyon has been kept better than most. A world away from the well-known beaches and Mayan ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula, lies a vast desert like area with huge canyons that cut deep into the landscape, home to indigenous communities and breath-taking scenery. This journey combines one of the greatest train rides in the world with the spectacular Pacific Coast.  Experience one of the greatest train rides in the world.

  • Explore the spectacular network of canyons by foot or by horse
  • Visit Jesuit churches and wander through the scented pine forests
  • Encounter the Tarahumara; the indigenous people of this incredible landscape
  • Snorkel with whale sharks and swim with sea lions
  • Relax on the beaches of Los Cabos

Board the Chihuahua Express for a spectacular journey through the Copper Canyon. Alight at various stages over several days to visit old Jesuit churches, lakes and waterfalls and stay in small hotels; some with spectacular views.  Walk amongst the extraordinary rock formations and the pine forests where the cooler, scented air brings a refreshing contrast to the hotter and deeper parts of the canyon network. For those looking for a less sedate experience, there is now a series of zip lines (one is over a kilometre in length) giving visitors an adrenaline fuelled day soaring across the canyon gathering speeds of some 60mph.

Leave the Copper Canyon behind for Baja California. Rich in wildlife and history, Baja California is home to unique wildlife that is effortlessly accessible. Take a boat out to watch the grey whales and their young or spend a day swimming with the sea lions or snorkelling with whale sharks  before relaxing on the Pacific Coast with a wide range of spoiling luxury hotels to choose from.

El Fuerte is a beautiful colonial town with a very rich history and a beautiful centre that is well worth a visit. This wealth is evident from the beautiful Spanish architecture most notable on the Palacio Municipal, the church and the Hotel Posada del Hidalgo.

Day 3

El Fuerte to Posada Barrancas by Chihuhua Aa Pacifico train

Transfer to El Fuerte's train station this morning for your First Class scenic train journey to Posada Barrancas (213km. Depart 08.40 and arrive 13.58).

The Chihuahua al Pacifico railway, is among the world's most scenic railway journeys. A considerable feat of engineering, it has 39 bridges and 86 tunnels along 655km of railway line. It connects the mountainous and arid interior of northern Mexico to the sun-drenched shores of the Pacific coast. It was opened in 1961 after many decades of construction. Used heavily by both passengers and freight, the train offers a fantastic journey through some of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery that Mexico has to offer.

The train starts by passing through grey and misty farmland, before starting to climb into the mountains of the Sierra Tarahumara, home to the Tarahumara Indians. The trip then becomes an exciting sequence of craggy cliffs, sheer canyon walls and rushing rivers far below. On arrival at the station, Posada Barrancas, descend the train and take the hotel transfer to the Mirador Hotel.

Day 4

Adventure Park Barranca del Cobre
The Adventure Park Barranca del Cobre, has a system of the longest zip lines in the world, allowing flights to heights of up to 400 metres and a speed of 65 to 110 kilometres per hour. 5 kilometres in total length over 7 flights and two suspension bridges. Upon completion of the course, you return comfortably aboard a cable car to the start spot.

Day 5

Private Transfer Posada Barrancas to Creel

Private full day transfer/tour from Posada Barrancas to Creel, stopping at Lake Arareco and the Valleys of the Monks, Mushrooms and Frogs along the way.

Explore the U-shaped Lake Arareco with unique and unusual rock formations as well as the natural rock formations in the shape of mushrooms. Here it is possible to see how volcanic erosion created these precariously balanced natural creations. Afterwards, visit the Fertility Rock, which is a distinctly phallic stone, revered for its fertility-giving properties.

Upon arrival to Creel, check in to your hotel and have the rest of the evening to explore the quaint town at leisure.

Creel is a small, almost alpine town with a fresh feel and surrounded by pine forests. While it is the starting point for numerous trips to the canyons, rivers and hot springs in the area, it is also the regional centre for the Tarahumara Indians, many of who you will see here in traditional dress.

You will be staying at The Lodge at Creel, bed and breakfast

Day 6

Creel to El Fuerte by the Chihuahua al Pacifico train

You will be staying at Posada del Hidalgo, bed and breakfast

Day 7

Fly Los Mochis to La Paz, Mexico

La Paz is the commercial and political capital of Baja California Sur although, as its name suggests, this is a peaceful Mexican port city with a provincial atmosphere. Hernan Cortes visited in 1535 but the region remained largely unpopulated until the 19th century. Pearl diving was the main industry here until the 1930s. Today, La Paz is the starting point for exploring a wealth of marine life within the sea of Cortez

You will be staying at Posada de las Flores, bed and breakfast

Day 8

Full Day excursion to Espirtu Santo Island
Private transfers will be included to and from the embarkation point for this special private boat tour to Espiritu Santo Island. After boarding the boat, our guides will give you a small briefing about the trip as you head out from the Bay of La Paz. After roughly 1.5 hours, you arrive at the sea lion colony for the first stop. You'll have plenty of time to swim, snorkel and interact with the playful sea lions in the company of your guide. Then climb back on board to navigate around the island in search of a pristine beach where your hosts await with a scrumptious meal. On the beach, guides will give a talk about the natural history of the island, plants and mangroves. Kayak around the bay, relax, or take a nature hike.

Day 9

Private Whale Shark Snorkelling and the Hidden Beaches of Balandra Bay
Whale sharks are the true "gentle giants" of the oceans. The largest fish on the planet, these remarkable beasts return yearly to the coast just off La Paz. You will be met in the hotel lobby at 8:15 am and transferred to the operations office to try on some snorkelling equipment. After a short walk to the pier board the boat and head out in search of whale sharks. If lucky, you will then have the opportunity to hop into the water with your guide to swim with the whale sharks.

Continue to Balandra Bay, a natural protected area and home to pristine beaches, mangroves, and stunning scenery. Here lunch is served before exploring the nature trails, snorkelling in the crystal water or simply relaxing on the beach before heading back to La Paz for the evening.

You will be staying at Posada de las Flores, bed and breakfast

Day 10

La Paz - San Jose del Cabo via Todos Santos

Located on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, San Jose del Cabo (more commonly referred to as Los Cabos in conjunction with Cabo San Lucas) is a real mixture of an authentic Mexican town with cobblestone streets radiating from the zocalo and mission church and the marina area, which is the modern face of Mexico with a host of bars, shops and restaurants.

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
