Overlooking the Bua River in Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Tongole Wilderness Lodge is true to its name. With just five river-facing suites and surrounded by 180,000 hectares of rugged hills and miombo woodland, the lodge offers complete seclusion in one of Malawi's least visited parks.
Why We Like Tongole Wilderness Lodge
Tongole is a beautiful lodge in a very beautiful, if overlooked, part of Malawi. What it cannot offer in wildlife, it more than makes up for with its idyllic setting, enthusiastic young guides, excellent food and range of activities.
The lodge's main building protrudes from the forest, thanks to its wide, vaulted roof. Beneath this, there is a beautiful upper deck on which you can dine or simply look out over the river and the park beyond.
The five thatched suites are all river facing, built in a traditional style that is reminiscent of the ranches of East Africa. Light and airy, the spacious suites are all open to the elements at the front, with simple metal gates that can be closed at night for security.
The pace at Tongole is very relaxed, focussing on a wilderness experience rather than a conventional safari. The activities available include:
- Bush walks and hikes
- Cultural experiences
- Fly camping
- Canoe trips
- Nature drives
Tongole Wilderness Lodge is located right in the middle of the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, overlooking the permanent Bua River. The lodge can be accessed by road from either Lake Malawi or Lilongwe, with the last hour of the drive is on dirt tracks through the park. Alternatively, there is a private airstrip only a short distance from the lodge.
