Tailor-Made Holiday

Madagascar - Andasibe-Mantadia & Anjajavy

Experience Madagascar in Style - Indris, Vanilla & Sunshine

11 days

from £2,995pp (excluding flights)

A few days exploring Madagascar’s rainforests with lemurs and chameleons galore in the atmospheric Andasibe, before a short flight across to the private reserve at Anjajavy combines perfect beaches, baobabs and vanilla rum.

  • Explore Andasibe-Mantadia Madagascar’s most accessible and interesting parks
  • Listen for the call of the Indri at sunrise and look for glowing chameleons by moonlight
  • Drive through the heartlands of the local Merina tribe and their unique villages
  • Relax on the shores of Anjajavy Peninsula where baobab forests meet tropical beach

This perfect introductory trip offers exactly what people want from Madagascar, exotic wildlife and even more exotic beaches. The journey begins in the capital, Antananarivo, from where you wind your way across the dramatic central plateau, through Malagasy villages and roadside stalls that give way to spectacular highland scenery. Arriving in Andasibe-Mantadia park, walks through the misty forests at daybreak are the perfect time to hear – and hopefully see – Madagascar’s largest lemur, the Indri. Their haunting call is the soundtrack to the safari here as other lemurs leap from tree to tree, in forests full of colourful chameleons by day and at night, glowing eyes peer at you from the hollows of trees as chameleons glow under the stars.

After you have exhausted camera batteries in the wilds, fly across to the beautiful Anjajavy Lodge, on the peninsula of the same name, where idyllic coves and white beaches are waiting to be discovered, if you can drag yourself away from the stunning tropical gardens and pool. The lodge even has its own nature reserve, so if the snorkelling, kayaking and lounging in the sun haven’t tired you out, self-guided walks or bike trails around the forests in the shade of baobab trees will. This trips classic combination of rainforests and beach remains a consistently popular journey for those keen to pick the best of this colourful country.

Day 1

Fly London to Nairobi overnight

Day 2

Fly Nairobi to Antananarivo

Antananarivo is literally translated as "City of a Thousand", in reference to the 1,000 Merina Tribe warriors, used by the king as protection of his city, but is also familiarly known as 'Tana'. Split into two regions (upper and lower towns), the city itself is a maze of bustling streets and alleyways, full of colourful markets, interspersed with ancient stone steps and historical sites.

Day 3

Drive from Antananarivo to Andasibe

This morning after breakfast, you depart for Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. This four hour journey is an adventure in itself as the drive takes in spectacular mountain highlands and traditional Merina villages, with rice paddies stretching away into the distance, arriving at the lodge around lunchtime.

Easily accessible from the capital, Antananarivo, Andasibe is one of Madagascar's most popular wildlife parks and offers great opportunities to see some of the country's exceptional wildlife including the unique indri. Its popularity is reflected in the high-quality accommodation and guiding available.

Day 4

Full day in Andasibe National Park in search of lemurs
Heading out at first light as the indris' calls rings out across the forest is a thrilling introduction to Andasibe. Whilst the country's largest lemurs are the star attraction, the diversity of wildlife found in Andasibe, ensures there is enough to keep you busy for days. Lemurs abound during day walks and wandering the forest trails is great fun as leaf-tailed geckos camouflage themselves on trees where tiny nose-horned chameleons hide under leaves and comet moths dry their wings in the sun. Head out after dark as tiny tenrecs rustle in the leaves and mouse lemurs sit wide-eyed in the torchlight, whilst a chorus of frogs act as the night time soundtrack.

Day 5

Day Trip to Mantadia National Park
Head out early for a tour of Mantadia National Park. Ranging in altitude from 800 to 1,260 metres, the parks harbours a great variety of species and has some good trails with gorgeous views across the forest with some great bird-watching opportunities, including specials such as the Scaly Ground Roller, Pitta-Like Ground Roller and Red Breasted Coua.

Chameleons and lemurs are, of course, found here, but given the remoteness of the park, the joy of Mantadia lies in the chance to explore this relatively untouched wilderness at your leisure. There is also the chance to visit Vakona Island for some close lemur encounters.

Nocturnal Walk
This afternoon is flexible, depending on your arrival time, but there will be an opportunity to head out into the forest to explore, including a nocturnal walk in the Mitsinjo Reserve to spot chameleons and lemurs by torchlight,

You will be staying at Vakona Forest Lodge, Full board

Day 6

Return to Antananarivo

After a leisurely breakfast, retrace your steps back to Antananarivo. After checking in to your hotel, the remainder of the day is at leisure to relax. Should you wish to explore Antananarivo, please discuss this with your guide who will be happy to run through the options with you.

You will be staying at Lokanga Boutique Hotel, Bed & Breakfast

Day 7

Activities at Anjajavy
Hidden on a peninsula surrounded by sea, tsingy (limestone formations), mangrove and baobab forest Anjajavy is there to be explored. Whilst many are drawn by the exclusivity of the beach and the fishing and kayaking on offer, Anjajavy's private reserve offers a remarkable variety of endemic fauna, from Coquerel's sifaka to spiny iguanas and colourful chameleons all of which are easy to see. Here you can take guided photography walks through the reserve over the next few days to see what you can discover or head on your own using the self-guided trails, or visit the small villages nearby using the lodges very own mountain bikes. There is also the chance to enjoy some night walks here - one of the few wilderness areas in Madagascar where this is possible - which adds an extra dimension to your time here. A highlight for many is to head out on a Sunday morning to visit the lively market, which takes place under the giant mango tree for a fascinating insight into this remote community who call this wilderness home.
