Diego Suarez

Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) is the gateway to the tropical North of Madagascar, named after two Portuguese admirals (Diego Diaz and Fernando Surarez) who founded the city, known affectionatly by many simply as Diego. The Malagasy name means "port" given its importance as one of the countries most strategic deep water ports, but it is the setting that people find stunning. The harbour itself is surrounded by hills and sugarloaf mountains to the east, whilst the faded colonial buildings could do with a lick of paint, they are full of character and charm, combining influences from the Arabs, Creoles and Comorans who have settled here over the years.
