Kung Fu & Pandas - highlights of China from Beijing, Guilin & Chengdu

China is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world and has a fascinating history that cannot fail to capture the imagination of both adults and children. As well as including many of the classic highlights of China this holiday idea will also ensure there are plenty of exciting things to both educate, excite and entertain the children.

  • Make dumplings with a local family in Beijing
  • Have a Kung Fu lesson at the Temple of Heaven, where the locals gather to exercise
  • Learn the traditional method of cormorant fishing in Guilin & explore the countryside by bicycle and river raft
  • See a Giant Panda
  • Witness the magical art of face changing at a Sichuan Opera

The trip begins in Beijing with time to take in the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Great Wall. Travel south to the magical region of Guilin where karst limestone peaks cover the landscape. Spend a day exploring Guilin including the fabulous Reed Flute Caves which are illuminated by coloured lights before boarding a boat to cruise the Li River to the pretty town of Yangshuo. Here you can spend some time at leisure exploring by bicycle as well as the chance to do some rafting on the river.

Your journey will end in Chengdu in the Sichuan province of China, home to the Giant Panda. Here you will have the chance to see these endangered bears at the breeding and research centre.  With direct flights now available in and out of Chengdu with British Airways it is a straight forward flight home from Chengdu, directly to London Heathrow, arriving later that same day.

Day 1

Fly London to Beijing overnight

Day 2

Day at leisure in Beijing


Beijing is China's capital, and a city of epic proportions. It is a cauldron of history, culture and enterprise. Offering a feast of elaborate and ambitious architecture, world famous landmarks, and culinary delights.


You will be staying at Novotel Xinqiao Hotel, Bed & Breakfast

Day 3

Full Day City Sightseeing with Family Focus
Drive through the city centre to vast Tiananmen Square, home to China's Parliament - The Great Hall of the People. Then visit the Forbidden City, the former home to China's Imperial Dynasties. After a local Lunch, visit the Hutongs - the small lanes and courtyard houses of old Beijing. Whilst here, visit the workshop of a Local Kite-Maker and a traditional Chinese kite will be offered to the children for flying at the Great Wall tomorrow. Later this afternoon, in a traditional home in the Hutongs our local 'house-wives' introduce you to daily life in this city through the local dishes that they would make for their families. The kitchen is in the outdoor courtyard and this is an experience of what today's China is all about. This evening, enjoy a fantastic performance of Kung Fu, the traditional martial art of China.

Day 4

Full Day Sightseeing to The Great Wall at Mutianyu with Family Focus
Visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu, where there will be ample opportunity to explore this section of the Wall and take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside. This is also a great place to fly the traditional Chinese kites from yesterday. There is also a fun, but commercial, toboggan ride back down to the bottom. Lunch will be arranged at the Schoolhouse Restaurant, which was the former school building in Mutianyu Village, from here, also learn how to make traditional Chinese noodles. Afterwards, return to the city and this evening; explore the Night Food Market where various weird and wonderful snacks can be seen.

Day 5

Temple of Heaven
Visit the magnificent Temple of Heaven, where the Emperors came to pray for good harvests and today it's where local residents come for morning exercises such as Tai Chi and Ballroom dancing. Whilst here, take a Tai Chi lesson.

Day 6

Fly Beijing to Guilin

Day 7

Reed Flute Caves, Da Zu Village & Evening Cormorant Fishing Show
Visit Reed Flute Caves, which have a wonderful collection of stalagmites and stalactites and the caves are beautifully illuminated. Later visit the traditional Da Zu Village (translated as 'Big Market') which grew in fortunes as a result of its trading position on the Ling Canal system.

Spend the remainder of the day at leisure.

This evening, see a performance of traditional cormorant fishing.

Situated in the south, the striking city of Guilin boasts some of China's most stunning natural beauty. The city has served as an inspiration to artists and poets for centuries, its otherworldly beauty marking it apart from other cities.

Set against a backdrop of extraordinary, almost magical limestone peaks, Guilin is as lively as it is beautiful. A vibrant and colourful night market offers a chance to pick up locally-produced goods from handicrafts to snacks. And its man-made lakes, beautifully lit at night, only add to the wow-factor.

Day 8

Li River boat trip to Yangshuo
Take a scenic boat ride along the Li River to Yangshuo, passing the famed karst peaks. On the Li River fishermen still use cormorants to fish. A simple lunch is served on board. Arrive in Yangshuo in the early afternoon where you will disembark and be transferred to your accommodation.

Day 9

Full Day Bamboo Rafting & Cycling
Drive to Dragon Bridge, which has a history over 1000 years, then take a traditional bamboo raft to Xing Long Zai, which will take approximately one and half-hours and is one of the more scenic stretches of the Yu Long River. On arrival, there is an opportunity for a leisurely bike ride or drive onwards to Xinping Old Town.

Yangshuo is a small market town and a lovely place to spend a few days. With a laid back feel and market stalls, bars and restaurants lining the cobbled streets plus the opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside on foot or by bicyle. Located on the Li River it is best reached by boat from the nearby town of Guilin offering the oppertunity to view the magical landscape that this region is renowned for.

The journey takes just over 3 hours and as well as the spectacular scenery offers a chance to see some of the local life as you pass small riverside villages, Water wheels irrigating the fields and local men fishing with cormorants from bamboo rafts.

Day 10

Fly Yangshuo to Chengdu

Bifeng Gorge Panda Sanctuary
Two hours drive from Chengdu, Bifeng Gorge Panda Sanctuary at Ya’an is home to about 80 pandas and offers some wonderful experiences with the possibility of playing with young pandas as part of their socialisation (subject to availability and payable at the time).

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province, an area renowned for its spicy regional cuisine making dining out here a wonderful experience.

This thriving yet laid back city is probably best known for one of the country's most iconic residents, the Giant Panda and a visit to one of the reserves is the easiest way to catch a glimpse or engage in a more hands on experience. Combine this with ancient temples and tombs and the giant Buddha in nearby Leshan.
