Fusing luxury with the latest in cutting-edge environmental design, Segera Retreat offers an unforgettably chic safari. Secluded and private, it rests in the wooded savannah and grasslands of the Laikipia Plateau, to the north-west of Mount Kenya.
The spacious villas offer privacy and a relaxed ambience, sitting amongst beautifully designed gardens. Each one offers dramatic views over the surrounding landscape, which is filled by an array of wildlife and birdlife. And the sights are not limited to the natural world, with Segera also home to a magnificent collection of artwork - The Zeitz Collection.
Why We Like Segera
Rarely can one place encompass so much and deliver so flawlessly. The spectacular artwork, fantastic guiding and world-class dining are all to be expected, but it is the warmth and personality of the staff at Segera that completes the experience.
Expect every single person to learn your name and to feel a sense of loss as you leave this remarkable place behind. Segera changes the perception of what a luxury safari lodge can offer.
Segera hides behind a dramatic cactus wall that encircles the property almost completely. Within this natural protection, lush gardens burst with colour, contrasting sharply with the rugged wilderness outside.
Sculptures dot the gardens, with countless spaces to dine privately each evening. At the entrance of the retreat, a tower-shaped wine room stands tall, beside a thatch-covered building that hosts a collection of curiosities on its second floor. These include letters from Hemingway and the original engine from the biplane from Out of Africa.
Linked by a maze of stone pathways that wind through the gardens, six private, wooden villas rise above the cactus wall. These thatched villas are built on elevated platforms, affording wonderful views of the savannah landscape. Private decks with lounge chairs and a hot tub are perfectly placed to watch antelopes and giraffes wander by.
Two exclusive houses are also positioned nearby - the lavish, stone-clad Segera House and the romantic Villa Segera with its beautiful image gallery.
Activities available at the retreat include day and night game drives, bush walks and camel walks. There is also the chance to get involved with local communities and conservation through a number of projects
However, the retreat is much more than a safari lodge. There is also a world-class spa, the chance to fly in the original plane from Out of Africa, the owner's vast private collection of African art and gardens littered with dramatic sculptures.
Segera is located on a private conservancy to the north-west of Nanyuki, bordering the Sosian and Ol Jogi conservancies. Access is typically by charter flight or helicopter to the retreat's private airstrip, which is next to the lodge.
