Tailor-Made Holiday

Kenya - Loisaba Conservancy and Masai Mara Safari

Explore a private conservancy in Laikipia and the Masai Mara National Reserve

11 days

from £4,695pp (excluding flights)

Explore a private conservancy in the wilds of Laikipia, before heading to the vast Masai Mara National Reserve. Combine cycling, camelback and horseback adventures with a more traditional safari experience – found at the heart of Kenya’s greatest wildlife region.

  • Make the most of a private conservancy, spotting game away from the crowds
  • Explore in a variety of ways, making the most of Laikipia’s dramatic scenery
  • Experience spectacular game viewing on the plains of the Masai Mara
  • Stay at a pair of beautifully designed, tented camps

Following a night at the wonderfully welcoming Hemingways Hotel, fly north into Laikipia. Head to the Loisaba Conservancy, which incorporates fantastic accommodation, wild landscapes and an array of big game.

Stay at Loisaba Tented Camp, which affords magnificent views from the edge of the escarpment upon which it rests. These spacious, airy tents make the most of the vistas, with wide verandas looking out over fertile hills that are dotted with low trees.

Here, set out to explore the conservancy’s vast landscape, which stretches to the horizon. This enthralling mix of grasslands, acacia copses and riverine valleys hides a wealth of animal life. Spot cheetahs, elephants, lions, leopards, antelopes and an array of bird species.

As well as conventional game drives, explore in far more unusual, exciting ways. Horse-ride across the plains beside herds of zebras, walk with local Samburu guides, pedal along narrow dirt trails and take camel safaris across the rugged landscape.

Leave the highlands of Laikipia behind for the sweeping grasslands of the Masai Mara. Stay on the banks of the Sand River, amidst the chic safari luxury of the Sand River Mara Camp. Watch hippos laze in the river’s cooling waters or spot hidden wildlife through the telescopes that dot the camp.

But as wonderfully comfortable and relaxed as this camp is, it is the location at the heart of the Masai Mara that makes it unforgettable. Set out on game drives deep into the Masai Mara National Reserve, exploring this captivating ecosystem. Numerous antelope species dot the plains, crocodiles haunt the murky waters of the Mara River and big cats stalk the long grasses.

Alive with action – big and small – this enthralling landscape hides a myriad of plots and subplots in the lives of its animal inhabitants. Watch as the show bursts to life – whether it be wildebeests surging across a river crossing, a cheetah accelerating towards a panicking gazelle or a pride of lions springing their trap on an unfortunate zebra.

Whilst Loisaba offers seclusion and a range of exciting activities, the Masai Mara offers safari for the purists – centring entirely on action-packed game drives. These contrasting approaches complement each other perfectly, creating a trip that is varied, engaging and full of phenomenal outdoor experiences.

Day 2

Fly Addis Ababa to Nairobi

Used mainly as a quick stopover, Nairobi is an interesting city with some good places to visit. Central Nairobi is like many other African cities with traffic jams, noise and a hint of chaos. The suburbs, however, are quite different, with excellent markets, restaurants and great places of interest to visit, such as The Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, the wonderful Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum.

Day 3

Travel from Nairobi to Laikipia (Air Transfer Journey)

Stretching from the rim of the Great Rift Valley to Mount Kenya, the Laikipia Plateau offers a truly great safari experience, allowing you to get away from the crowds and into a remote and untouched slice of Africa.

From fertile savannah to the wild shores of Lake Turkana, the area has a wide range of landscapes, including high plains and low forested valleys. Home to more endangered species than anywhere else in East Africa, this is the place to see African wild dogs - set against a rugged and dramatic wilderness.

Day 4

Activities at Loisaba Tented Camp
The sheer size of Loisaba Conservancy (56,000 acres) means that you can spend weeks exploring and never encounter the same thing twice. Given the scale, the best way to discover the wildlife and people at Loisaba is on a game drive, whether early morning or late afternoon, your guide will help you explore the open plains, river banks and small forests.

If wheels are more your thing, then there are some excellent mountain bike trails criss-crossing the conservancy for more adrenaline and excitement than traditional drives, whereas walking safaris are the best way to enjoy the smaller flora and fauna often overlooked in a vehicle or on a bike. This is also a wonderful opportunity to spend time with the Samburu warriors who call the area home and whose knowledge of the region is fascinating. Finally, there is the chance to enjoy some time fishing the rivers and dams year round, where a picnic, drinks are all the equipment is provided so you can relax on the river banks and watch the world go by.

Day 6

Travel from Laikipia to Masai Mara (Air Transfer Journey)

The Masai Mara is an iconic safari destination. Famous for countless wildlife documentaries, the wildlife viewing here remains the best in Africa. Over the course of a few days, it is possible to see almost every animal indigenous to the region, with notable highlights being the well-established prides of big cats and the annual migration of zebra and wildebeest, one of the world's most spectacular wildlife events.

There is always something to see and every month can offer spectacular wildlife drama - the open plains and endless skies are a photographer's dream.

Adjoining the Serengeti in Tanzania and forming the northern end of the great migration ecosystem, this is the traditional land of the Maasai people. A visit also offers a chance to encounter this nomadic tribe, who offer a fascinating cultural dimension to the area.

Everybody has an opinion on the Mara, but it remains the best place in Africa for consistently superb big game viewing and should not be missed.
