Villa in Lake Como, Italy, Europe

Milan and The Lakes

Combine the natural beauty and dramatic landscapes of the Italian Lakes with the chic sophistication of Milan.

An area of outstanding natural beauty, unsurprisingly the Italian Lakes became the place where generations of writers, poets and composers rented lakeside villas in which to work, so inspired by the glorious scenery that surrounded them.

Milan and the Lakes

The Italian Lakes lie in the region of Lombardy in Northern Italy. Milan is the natural gateway to this region, situated on the flatter plains of Southern Lombardy. For the most part, people pass straight through Milan to reach the glorious Lakes in the north, however, there is plenty worth seeing in Milan such as Leonardo da Vinci’s mural of “The Last Supper” on the refectory wall of the Santa Maria Delle Grazie.

Lake Garda is the largest lake and attracts a large number of sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts. Lake Como has the most striking scenery, surrounded by tall peaks that rise from the lake edge and opulent, luxurious villas and palazzi. The hiking in the area is superb if you feel the need to get away from the Lake. Lake Maggiore has a much flatter shoreline and is more sedate with some charming gardens and walks to enjoy. Whichever lake you decide to visit, time can be spent relaxing beside the lake, eating at bustling pavement cafes and traditional pizzerias, walking, cycling, sailing and visiting enchanting gardens and villas that line their shores.

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way.
