Tailor-Made Holiday

Indonesia - Bali and Sulawesi

14 days

from £2,995pp (excluding flights)

To combine Bali and Sulawesi offers the chance to visit two very different islands. Bali, with its beaches, sometimes busy, sometimes remote, Ubud, the cultural heart with buzzing markets, temples and green paddy vistas, scattered throughout by some of the world’s best hotels and Sulawesi with it's verdant green landscape and evocotive traditional customs.

  • In a region renowned for its food, have a cooking lesson, explore the street food and eat fresh fish with your toes in the sand.
  • Wonder at the elaborate ceremonies in Tana Toraja, north Sulawesi
  • Cycle through the gentle rice paddies of Ubud, Bali
  • Reach the summit of Mount Batur in Bali
  • Marvel at the traditional boat shaped Tongkonan Houses, Sulawesi

Sulawesi, just an hour’s flight from Bali, is a world away in terms of development and heritage. With traditional communities showcasing ancient architecture and ceremonies, bustling buffalo markets and swathes of terraced hillsides, Sulawesi is certainly Indonesia beyond the ordinary.

Fly into Bali and travel to Ubud, staying at one of charming boutique properties such as Uma Ubud. Have a cooking lesson after visiting the local market, take a mountain bike through small villages or explore colourful temples dotted with offerings. Fly to Sulawesi and after a pretty long but fascinating drive arrive in Rantepao, home to the iconic Tana Toraja community. A few days to explore the eerie cliff graves, local villages with Tonkonan Houses and markets before returning to Bali to finish with a few days relaxing on the beach.

The villages is often made up on one large extended family with the prized buffalo often tied up outside.

From here visit the cliff side graves where wooden carved effigies, called Tau Tau, sit high up in the cliff, representing the members of the family buried within.
