This remote and jungle bound Maya metropolis is made up of around 3,000 structures and was once one of the largest and most significant Maya cities. The site features huge pyramidal temples, with the tallest reaching nearly 50 metres above the jungle canopy. Flourishing from 800 BC to 900 AD, Tikal offers visitors a real reminder of what the Maya empire achieved at its peak. The surrounding jungle is alive with wildlife; spider monkeys, agoutis, foxes, and ocellated turkeys can often be seen stalking the ruins, adding to the atmosphere.
The indigenous peoples of Central America are integral to the cultural fabric of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. Their rich heritage is a highlight of any journey to the region. The Maya, known for their advanced knowledge and ancient cities, continue to shape local traditions. The Aztec legacy thrives in Mexico City’s architecture and art. In Livingston, the Garifuna preserve an Afro-Caribbean heritage through music and storytelling. Near Palenque, the Lacandon live in harmony with nature, safeguarding ancient customs. Together, these communities form a vibrant cultural tapestry.
Exploring Copan with David Sedat offers a privileged insight into the remarkable Maya civilisation. Renowned as an authority on Copan, David draws on decades of archaeological fieldwork to unravel the narratives etched in stone. Wander through the Great Plaza, past intricately carved stelae and the iconic hieroglyphic stairway of Temple 26, with David bringing the city’s history vividly to life. With scarlet macaws soaring overhead and David’s stories of the cosmic calendars and the political intrigue of rulers such as 18 Rabbit, Copan’s grandeur and legacy are vividly restored.
