Highlights of Zambia

Victoria Falls, Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa Safari

12 days

from £5,795pp (excluding flights)

With a combination of wildlife, adventure and spectacular scenery, it’s hard to imagine a country that has as much to offer as Zambia. Visiting the South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Victoria Falls on one holiday will see you wanting to return for more.

  • Visit the South Luangwa National Park, home of the walking safari
  • Go on game drives, canoe and go tiger fishing in the Lower Zambezi
  • See the mighty and iconic Victoria Falls

Zambia is by far one of Africa’s ultimate safari destinations. The South Luangwa National Park is some nine thousand square kilometres of pristine wilderness and home to the walking safari. With an abundance of game, spectacular game viewing is guaranteed and sightings of big cats are amongst the best in Africa.

Down in the Lower Zambezi, spend time out on the river boating, canoeing or fishing or enjoy game drives in this beautiful park sandwiched between the rugged and dramatic escarpment and the Zambezi River. This area offers peaceful game viewing in true African wilderness.

A holiday to Zambia would not be complete without a visit to Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most spectacular natural attractions and a great place to relax after a wildlife packed safari. However, if you are still up for more excitement there are plenty of activities on offer; take an exhilarating plunge at Devils Pool on the edge of the Falls, raft the rapids or take a helicopter flight over the Falls into the Batoka Gorge.

Days at Kafunta
With direct access via its own pontoon to the remote region of South Luangwa National Park, Kafunta offers a wilder, more authentic experience than most in the area. Early morning drives are of course on offer, but the lodge also has some excellent, very relaxed walking options with superb guides.

Afternoon drives brings sun-downers and thirsty animals coming to drink and then as night falls, the nocturnal animals begin to emerge. You can however relax and let the wildlife come to you as the lodge has an excellent hide overlooking rich flood plain, or you can watch the world go by at Luangwa's only natural hot tub, fed by a natural geothermal source. Being more remote, there is also the chance for a humbling visit to a nearby community, with whom the lodge works closely. If this is all too much, then simply retreat to the spa and unwind.

Marking the southern end of the Great Rift Valley, South Luangwa is the richest park in Zambia and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa for scenery and variety of animals. Its 3,500sq miles is unsurpassed and the Luangwa River, which meanders gently through it, enhances it even further. A combination of ox bow lakes, forest and plains are host to huge concentrations of game, while providing shelter to over 400 species of birds.

Day 5

Travel from South Luangwa to Lower Zambezi (Air Transfer Journey)

Days at Anabezi Luxury Tented Camp
Spend time exploring the Lower Zambezi National Park, taking advantage of the activities on offer at Anabezi. The area around the camp, rich with fallen yellow corn pods from the ana trees, attracts an array of wildlife. The waters of the Zambezi River also draw wildlife to the area, with many thirsty animals leaving the woodlands and savannah to drink here.

Take day and night game drives in 4x4 vehicles, led by an expert guide, in search of the park's diverse wildlife. Leopard sightings are particularly frequent here, with the area surrounding the camp dominated by a huge male, who preys upon the resident impalas. Elephants are also commonly spotted amongst the woodlands and close to the river.

Alternatively, explore on foot, led by an armed guide, heading into the Kulefu woodlands and the surrounding areas. This is a great way to see the bush up close and to gain an insight into the flora, bird life and insects that thrive within the park. Other activities include canoeing safaris, as well as boating and fishing on the Zambezi River.

The Lower Zambezi National Park is a magnificent wilderness made up of the Zambezi River flood plain, a strip of woodland and grassland, and the more heavily wooded Zambezi Escarpment. Up to a mile wide, the Zambezi River meanders alongside the park, attracting a variety of wildlife to its islands and creating incomparable canoeing and game viewing opportunities - not least the chance to see the 'big greys' up close.

You will be staying at Anabezi Luxury Tented Camp, full board

Day 9

Travel from Lower Zambezi to Livingstone (Air Transfer Journey)

Livingstone is the main town on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls and a great base to explore the area. Described by the Kololo tribe as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya', the Smoke that Thunders, the Victoria Falls are a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Aside from the Falls, there are many activities on offer here, from adrenalin sports like white water rafting to sunset cruises down the Zambezi and historic train journeys.

Typical Day of Activities at Waterberry Zambezi Lodge
Spend time exploring the Livingstone area. Choose from a range of activities on offer at the lodge. These include a visit to the thunderous Victoria Falls ($20 entrance fee must be paid locally); cruises on the Zambezi River at dawn, during the day or at sunset; fishing excursions; picnics on tranquil islands; bird watching with an expert guide; a cultural walk through a nearby village; and a tour of Livingstone, including the traditional Maramba Market.

Jackie Devereux, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
