Tailor-Made Holiday

Highlights of Venezuela including Angel Falls

18 days

from £4,025pp (excluding flights)

A comprehensive journey that encompasses many of the highlights of Venezuela, including Angel Falls, the Llanos and the idyllic islands of Los Roques.

  • Discover the highest waterfall in the world: Angel Falls
  • Spend time in Los Llanos an area inhabited by more than 50 mammal species
  • Cross the Gran Sabana, a grassy plateau interspersed with dramatic table mountains
  • Relax on the powder white sands of Los Roques

This holiday idea to Venezuela takes you on a wonderful journey to the colonial town of Merida in the foothills of Pico Bolivar the highest snow-capped mountain in Venezuela.   Visit coffee farms and cocoa plantations before leaving the high Andean mountains behind for the fertile plains of Los Llanos.  The Llanos is comparable to Brazil’s Pantanal and wildlife is plentiful including the elusive anaconda, giant anteaters, capybara and caiman.

Swapping the flood plains for the grasslands of Gran Sabana, a 3 day drive through this dramatic landscape home to Jurassic table top mountains follows the route of the gold and diamond mining industry.    The area is also a prime bird watching location.

Whether you trek to, or fly by, Angel Falls does not fail to impress as it drops 979 metres to the tropical rainforest below.  This area is home to a number of cascading waterfalls, lush vegetation, orchids and the trekking and bird watching is superb.

Your holiday concludes on the picturesque island of Los Roques. A more sophisticated island than neighbouring Isla Margarita, Los Roques and the nearby deserted islands with their powder white sands and glass- like water offer fantastic snorkelling, diving and sailing experiences and delightful boutique accommodation.

Day 9

Gran Sabana Route Day 1
You will meet by your private English speaking driver/guide for departure in a 4x4 vehicle to the Gran Sabana.

Along the way you will pass villages such as Upata which during the gold rush was an important crossroads for transport of the precious metal between El Callao and Ciudad Bolivar: the golden post was the name given to the wagon pulled by mules that hauled nearly 3.000 kg of gold annually.

Guasipati was the administrative and political centre of a great part of the gold and diamond mining area. Anyone could search for gold in the rivers. El Callao, the main gold mining village, attracted all types including fugitives from French Guyana, Venezuelans escaping civil war, others in search of a better life or fortune hunters escaping from Trinidad and English Guyana. Tumeremo represented the point of departure for the impenetrable jungle. Errant searchers for gold and diamonds would delve in the jungle and return to sell or to buy supplies for the journey.

Nowadays, little is left of the glorious past, only sleepy towns that keep the fascination of adventure and an extraordinary past. As your journey continues, you'll pass the Cuyuni river, whose waters, it was believed, were populated by electric eel.

Continue to Gran Sabana through the village of Las Claritas and Sierra de Lema, surrounded by dense evergreen rain forest, which can be viewed from the viewpoint of Piedra de la Virgen where you will take a break. Continue to the Lost World of the Gran Sabana, described by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, characterised by a landscape of soft hills covered by savanna, interrupted by forests and waterways, one of Venezuela's most fascinating landscapes.

Today you will travel approx 400 km on tarmac roads and 50 km on dirt roads.

You will be staying at Chivaton Camp, Full board

Day 10

Gran Sabana Route Day 2
After breakfast, depart to the Indigenous community of Iboribo (Liwo-riwo) set on the right bank of the Aponwao river. Travel on a local curiara to cross the river and admire the Chinak Merú falls, a 105 meter high waterfall on pink sand surrounded by gallery forest and groups of tubular bromeliads that stick out from the river banks.

After lunch, continue south, admiring the savanna along the way, a green tapestry interrupted by groups of Moriche or Kuai palms, of great use to the local Pemon community as they are employed in making hammocks, rope, baskets and roofs with fibre extracted from the leaves; wood for doors, windows and bridges are extracted from the trunk; the marrow offers an edible flour and it produces edible fruit too.

Even more charming is the background where you can catch a glimpse of the magical tepuys, meaning mountains in the Pemon tongue. A break to visit the Kama Merú cascade, one of the most beautiful in the Gran Sabana with a 50 meter fall and to the lookout nak'piapo from which, weather permitting, we will be able to enjoy the imposing view of the Macizo del Roraima with the tepuys Ilu-Tepuy, Yuruani-Tepuy (or Iwarkarima-Tepuy), Kukenan-Tepuy and Roraima.

Today you will travel approx 80 km on dirt roads and 200 km on tarmac roads.

You will be staying at Yakoo Camp, Full board

Day 11

Gran Sabana Route Day 3
After breakfast, continue on the Ruta de la Gran Sabana with a break to visit Quebrada de Jaspe, a waterfall with clear water falling on pink and yellow jasper rocks. Following is a visit to Yuruani or Arapena Mer where the water is tinted with pinkish and yellowish hues from the rocks bellow. Break in Suroape for a refreshing swim under the small cascade. After lunch, visit to Quebrada Pacheco or Arapan Merú, characterised by a clear waterfall in the middle of a very green forest. A final visit to the Indian community of San Francisco de Yuruaní with time for shopping for typical Pemon handicrafts. Return to Santa Elena de Uairén in the evening.
