Tailor-Made Holiday

Highlights of Trinidad & Tobago

16 days

from £2,245pp (excluding flights)

This 16 day holiday idea offers a combination of privately guided exploration and relaxation on the Caribbean’s most southerly islands.

• Explore the colourful mix of cultures, historic legacy and Creole cuisine in bustling and brash capital city, Port of Spain.
• See the brilliant crimson flash of Scarlet Ibis flying in to roost at Caroni Swamp.
• Stay in one of the world’s top birding lodges in the Northern Mountain Range.
• Observe Giant Leatherback Turtles coming ashore to lay eggs and young hatchlings scurrying back to sea at Grande Riviere (Apr–Aug).

Begin your trip on the little visited island of Trinidad with a few nights in the capital city Port of Spain, home to the world’s most colourful Carnival (sorry Rio!). You’ll have a guided tour of the city, visiting a Mas Camp and Steelpan Yard to learn about the history and significance of Carnival and music on the islands.  Explore the dramatic valleys and rugged coast of the Northern Mountain Range, where the Andes, in a final flourish of jungle clad peaks, dive into the Caribbean Sea.  This region offers tremendous bird watching and hiking opportunities and between April and August, the chance to witness Giant Leatherback Turtles laying eggs on rugged and remote Caribbean beaches.

We’ll fly you onto sister island, Tobago, for either a week of relaxation or continued exploration.  Tobago offers some beautiful golden beaches, great snorkelling and diving and a mountainous interior that is ripe for hiking and further bird watching, within the Western Hemisphere’s oldest Rainforest Reserve. You may choose to have a hire car on Tobago.

Day 2

Port of Spain City Tour
Meet your driver/guide in your hotel at 10 this morning for privately guided Port of Spain City Tour. The island of Trinidad is a melting pot of cultures and religions reflected principally in its architecture and food. For this reason Port of Spain is one of the Caribbean's most interesting and colourful capital cities.

Discover the seat of Parliament, the Red House and find out about the secret behind its colour. Visit the Queen's Park Savannah and its turn of the 20th century colonial homes, before making your way through the old city with a visit to the old slave settlements of Free Town, now known as Belmont.

Lunch is included today. Return to your hotel around 3pm.

Day 3

Afternoon visit to Caroni Swamp (Shared)
The Caroni Swamp is a wildlife reserve on the west coast of Trinidad, south of the capital. It is home to a diverse range of animals. From your river launch, you can view anteaters, caimans, snakes, cranes, or some of the many migratory birds.
The highlight of this tour however, is the national bird, the scarlet ibis. Catch the bright scarlet flashes as they return to roost in the later afternoon/early evening. This swamp is one of a few places on the islands where the Ibis nests. It's an impressive sight with the Northern Mountain Range as a backdrop.
You will be collected from your hotel mid-afternoon and returned to your hotel after the tour.
The boat trip will be on a shared basis.
