  • Stay on a small private Island on Lake Titicaca
  • Venture off the beaten track in the Sacred Valley, exploring the less visited sites
  • Visit the enchanting Machu Picchu citadel and former Inca capital of Cusco

This holiday captures the main highlights of southern Peru, starting in the white city of Arequipa, a charming place built from volcanic sillar stone and surrounded by snowcapped volcanoes. Colca Canyon and Lake Titicaca offer two extremes, one of the deepest canyons in the Americas and the highest navigable lake in the world. Both have fascinating wildlife, colourful indigenous communities and jaw dropping scenery.

Head to the Sacred Valley to visit incredible ruins, snow peaked mountains and remote communities. Stay here before travelling to the enigmatic royal palace of Machu Picchu. Finish in Cusco, the capital of the Incas and experience a living history of colonial streets, where houses and churches have been built on original Inca walls.

Fly Lima to Arequipa

Perched spectacularly at the flanks of Volcano El Misti, Chachani and Pichu-Pichu and beneath the predominantly blue skies of south western Peru, Arequipa commands a setting as engaging as the city itself.

Founded by Spanish conquistadors in 1540, Arequipa offers some of finest examples of colonial architecture in Peru - if you want to get a feel for the long history of this amazing country, there are few better places to start.

Day 3

Half Day City Tour
Half day city tour of the highlights of Arequipa, its cobbled streets and many markets. Of particular interest is Santa Catalina Convent, opened in 1970 after four centuries of isolation, it is a miniature colonial town where 450 nuns live in total seclusion. Visit the arcaded colonial buildings around the central Plaza de Armas with its gardens, fountains and palm trees and on one side the massive cathedral founded in 1612.

Day 4

Arequipa to Colca Canyon Overnight
Depart from Arequipa to Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, a journey of approximately four hours. The route travels through barren and beautiful landscapes in the foothills of the Andes and crosses a pass of nearly 5,000 metres. Look out for llamas and alpacas grazing at the side of the road on the way.

Day 5

Colca Canyon to Puno
Visit the Cruz del Condor view point, one of the deepest points of the canyon and home to the Andes condor. Early morning is the best time to see these enormous birds soaring on the rising mountain thermals. Drive through the surrounding villages with pretty colonial churches, heading further up into the Andes to Lake Titicaca, journey of approx 4 hours.

This astonishing landscape, featuring thermal pools, the smouldering volcano of Sabancaya and timeless adobe villages dotting the canyon rim, can be explored on mountain bike, horseback, by organised trek - or navigated by raft along the rapids of Rio Colca. Whichever method you choose, a journey into the Colca Canyon is a thrilling adventure not to be missed.

Day 6

Arrive on the island
Early start to Suasi Island from the pier at the hotel, travel by speed boat across the lake. On the way visit the Uros Indians and Taquile Island on Lake Titicaca. Marvel at the animals, bird life, views and way of life on the highest navigable lake in the world at 3,850 meters. The Uros Indians hunt, fish and live off the lake on floating islands, made from the reeds found in Lake Titicaca. Taquile Island has a number of Inca ruins and Inca terracing, an interesting island to watch the locals in their traditional clothing and watch their weaving techniques.

Continue to Suasi Island, arriving at lunch time. The afternoon is free to relax or explore the island.

Puno is situated on the northwest shore of Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 3850 metres. Puno is no great beauty but is the folkloric centre of Peru, with many spontaneous events and festivals taking place, plus the best place to buy local handicrafts. The deep blue of mystical Lake Titicaca and the clear and clean light, affords stunning views.

Also visit nearby Maras, famous for its salt mines and the hundreds of salt ponds. From here travel on to the remote but beautiful Moray, an Inca agricultural experimental centre known for its elliptical irrigation terraces, each with its own microclimate. The scenery in this area is completely breathtaking.

Cusco, the ancient capital of the Incas, was founded around 1100 AD. It is a beautiful city of Spanish and Inca influences with endless colonial sights to see including churches, monasteries and convents interspersed with Inca foundations, walls, doorways, and arches.
