Day 1
Reykjavik
Arrive into Iceland’s Keflavik International Airport where you will be met and transferred to the hotel in Reykjavik. In the evening, meet other group travellers at a welcome dinner where expedition leaders give an brief introduction.
Day 2
Reykjavik - Keflavik - Tasiilaq
After breakfast, do a private group tour of the Raufarholshellir Lava Tunnel, one of the longest lava tunnels in Iceland formed during a volcanic eruption around 5,000 years ago. Continue to Seltun Geothermal Area to see bubbling mud pools and steaming springs, and the point at which the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. Transfer back to the airport for an onward flight to Greenland.
Day 3
Tasiilaq
Wake in the town of Tasiilaq and head out with expedition leaders on a guided hike to Flower Valley where a central waterfall surrounds mountain peaks overlooking the bay. In the afternoon, learn about Greenlandic culture at the Ammassalik Museum housing East Greenlandic masks, sleds, beadwork and tupilak carvings. A local resident will meet with the group and share insights into life in this remote corner of Greenland.
Day 4
Tasiilaq - Sermilik Fjord
By boat, look out for whales and icebergs en route to Base Camp Greenland located near the hilltop hamlet of Tinit on the east side of Sermilik Fjord and home to less than one hundred residents. A region where ancient graves and ruins of Inuit sod house foundations can be seen. Settle into your private cabin tent, followed by lunch and a kayaking expedition amongst the icebergs.
Days 5-7
Sermilik Fjord
Over the next few days explore the outdoor playground of the 60-mile-long ‘iceberg highway’ in Sermilik Fjord. By zodiac and kayak, see huge icebergs and get guided insights into the landscape, biodiversity and history of the region. Visit isolated Greenlandic villages and hike around the Greenland Ice Sheet which covers 80% of the country and stretches more than 1,500 miles from north to south. Walk through fields of Arctic cotton grass and berry bushes, spotting Arctic fox, ptarmigan and northern wheatear birds. Each evening, return to the camp for a freshly prepared dinner.
Day 8
Sermilik Fjord - Kulusuk
Begin the day with a hike through the Arctic tundra. By boat or helicopter, transfer to Kulusuk, a small settlement where some residents still collect water from a communal tap house. If time allows, go on a guided coastal walk before dinner at the hotel.
Day 9
Kulusuk - Reykjavik
Today head out by boat passing tabular icebergs en route to a small island for a half day glacier walk. Peer down moulins, well-like tunnels carved by meltwater running into the glacier from the surface. Return to Kulusuk for a farewell lunch and a private performance of Greenlandic drumming and dancing. In the evening, board a flight back to Keflavik International Airport for a final night in Iceland.
Day 10
Reykjavik
Check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport for onward travel home.
Stay in an expeditionary camp in an extremely remote region on the edge of the vast Sermilik Fjord, reachable by helicopter and boat, and home to less than one hundred people. Explore the 2,000-foot vertical cliffs of Soemandsfjeldet by zodiac and embark on guided sea kayaking in the bay. Explore the mountainsides and wander near glaciers that wind down from the Greenland Ice Sheet, binoculars in hand to scope out nearby wildlife like arctic fox, eiders, loons and peregrine falcons.
Experience Inuit culture when visiting the remote villages where hunting and fishing remain at the centre of the community. Though this area is profoundly secluded, the wider region is dotted with a few isolated villages where Greenlandic Inuit people practice subsistence lifestyles in this stunning yet uncompromising Arctic environment. In varied encounters, learn about their culture and discover how they are retaining their traditions while adapting to contemporary life in the 21st century.
Wander the town of Tasiilaq and hike above the bay with views of granite peaks that surround the valley’s central waterfall and lakes fringed with arctic wildflowers. East Greenland’s main town of 2,000 inhabitants is a hub for outdoor adventure, from hiking and kayaking in summer to dog sledding and heli-skiing in winter. With a guide, visit the Ammassalik Museum and meet a local resident to learn more about Greenlandic culture in this isolated region.
