Why we like it

The unrushed yet focused nature of this trip makes the most of what Uganda has to offer. No visit is complete without spending an unforgettable hour in the company of mountain gorillas, but the diverse landscape of Queen Elizabeth National Park, with its unusual tree-climbing lions and troops of chimpanzees, adds a taste of safari with a distinctly Ugandan twist.

This, combined with Harry’s guidance throughout, means that this trip is rich with photographic opportunities, both for amateur and experienced photographers.

Cruise along the Kazinga Channel, where elephants and buffalos come to drink. Take game drives across the various ecosystems, spotting Ugandan kob and tree-climbing lions. Trek in the beautiful Kyambura Gorge, in search of chimpanzees. Finish by joining resident researchers on a morning game drive, as they drive off-road in search of lions.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to one of just two surviving populations of endangered mountain gorillas. Set out on foot to track down one of several habituated families. Joined by Harry, get close to the gorillas and spend an hour in their presence. Photograph them as they play, eat and groom one another. This is a captivating sight and one that can be challenging to capture.

For those who want more time, there is the option to trek again on the following day. Alternatively, explore the forest on guided walks, meet the local community or relax at the beautifully situated Bwindi Lodge.

Bwindi Lodge £££££

  • Uganda
  • Safari and Wildlife Lodge

This attractive, low key lodge was one of the first to be built in the area and sits in a fantastic location, with uninterrupted views of Bwindi Forest. The addition of a few coloured panes of glass in the walls allows plenty of sunlight into the large rooms, which all lead out to a small veranda at the front to soak up the fantastic views, best enjoyed with a cup of steaming coffee first thing in the morning. The lodge’s restaurant and cosy fireside bar are on raised decks, also offering great views over the forest with the large outdoor patio perfect for soaking up the sun in between treks into the forest. In fact, the lodge is so good, that gorillas have even been known to pay a visit on occasion.

Why a Steppes expert-led group tour

1.Experience Matters

We have been running insightful and groundbreaking group tours since our inception in 1989. We have worked with institutions such as the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and run wildlife tours in conjunction with conservation agencies such as Fauna & Flora International, Wildlife Conservation Society, the Orangutan Foundation, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Jane Goodall Institute.

2.Size Matters

Our average group size is typically eight to ten people, smaller than other group tours typically offered – a factor which many of our clients appreciate. Travelling as part of a smaller group provides a more intimate, personalised and relaxed atmosphere.

4.It’s about who you know

We have developed an enviable pool of expertise from which to choose our tour experts, who we carefully select based on their knowledge, companionship and personality. Often, these experts can use their influence to facilitate private access to sites not typically open to the public.

3.Like-Minded People

Steppes Travellers are like-minded people – interesting, interested and curious. Our group tours aim to create an easy and informal atmosphere – we have a lot of fun on our tours and many friendships have been formed.

5.Value for money

Our tours are well-priced to ensure you get real value for money. We include gratuities on the majority of our tours and do not pass on currency surcharges. We strive to look after single travellers as well as we can, keeping single supplements to a minimum.

6.Peace of Mind

When you travel on one of our group tours, you will be looked after by our local agents and your tour expert with the back-up of our 24-hour emergency number and duty manager. All our holidays are fully bonded and protected – our ATOL number is ATOL 6495.
