Why we like it

This tour offers a well-thought out variety of Saxon villages and fortified churches, vibrant Roma communities, markets, and traditional villages where horse carts are the preferred method of transport and hay is cut by hand. Compared to much of Europe, Romania receives but a trickle of visitors. We think this is set to change so our advice is to travel now before the word completely gets out.

Bucovina, Romania

Bucovina

Located in the north-eastern part of Romania, Bucovina is one of the smallest regions of the country, yet, one of the most beautiful. The region is full of beautiful villages, lovely groves of beech trees and, of course, its uniquely painted monasteries. These masterpieces are inspired by Byzantine art, they tell visual stories about the past, often showing important moments from the history of Christianity, or tales from the Bible. Eight of them are under UNESCO protection.

Maramures, Romania

Maramures

Romania’s most traditional region Maramures, up in the north-west of the country, is a land of steepled wooden churches, villages where peasant culture thrives, wooden horse carts rattle down the roads, and matters great and small are discussed over glasses of fiery homemade horinca.

Viscri village is a saxon rural commune with fortified church in Transylvania, landmark of Romania
Romania

Viscri

Viscri lies to the south-east of Cluj Napoca, and is one of five villages making up the Brunesti Commune. The village now has UNESCO heritage status, thanks to the efforts of Caroline Fernolend and the Mihai Eminescu Trust, whose President is the Prince of Wales. The village boasts a 12th-century fortified church and well-preserved architecture and traditions.

Romanian Food

Romanians always celebrate with food. Be it Christmas, Easter, a wedding, or a burial. Romanians have a specific dish for each. On Easter Sunday, Romanians gather around the family table or go out on a picnic and enjoy traditional Romanian food. For the most part, meals are simple and hearty. Breakfasts tend to focus on bread, jam, local honey and eggs. Lunches will vary between hot and cold. Dinners tend to be meat, mashed potato and vegetables. Vegetarians and vegans can be accommodated but away from the main cities, it is probably fair to say that options will be limited.

Why a Steppes expert-led group tour

1.Experience Matters

We have been running insightful and groundbreaking group tours since our inception in 1989. We have worked with institutions such as the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and run wildlife tours in conjunction with conservation agencies such as Fauna & Flora International, Wildlife Conservation Society, the Orangutan Foundation, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Jane Goodall Institute.

2.Size Matters

Our average group size is typically eight to ten people, smaller than other group tours typically offered – a factor which many of our clients appreciate. Travelling as part of a smaller group provides a more intimate, personalised and relaxed atmosphere.

4.It’s about who you know

We have developed an enviable pool of expertise from which to choose our tour experts, who we carefully select based on their knowledge, companionship and personality. Often, these experts can use their influence to facilitate private access to sites not typically open to the public.

3.Like-Minded People

Steppes Travellers are like-minded people – interesting, interested and curious. Our group tours aim to create an easy and informal atmosphere – we have a lot of fun on our tours and many friendships have been formed.

5.Value for money

Our tours are well-priced to ensure you get real value for money. We include gratuities on the majority of our tours and do not pass on currency surcharges. We strive to look after single travellers as well as we can, keeping single supplements to a minimum.

6.Peace of Mind

When you travel on one of our group tours, you will be looked after by our local agents and your tour expert with the back-up of our 24-hour emergency number and duty manager. All our holidays are fully bonded and protected – our ATOL number is ATOL 6495.
