“I have taken many group tours in the last 10 years and this tour was one of the best. Golestan Palace, Tehran, Iran
Tehran, Iran

Beneath its rough façade, Tehran is Iran’s biggest and most vibrant city, a place where contemporary culture thrives alongside conservative traditionalism. Tehran is a busy metropolis packed with almost 20% of the country’s population and despite its reputation as a modern, expanding city.

Shiraz, Iran

Shiraz and Persepolis

Shiraz was one of the most influential cities in the medieval Islamic world and was the Iranian capital during the Zand dynasty when many of its most beautiful buildings were built or restored. Alexander the Great passed by on his travels sacking the nearby city of Persepolis as he did so, but even today it is an impressive ruin. Huge columns still stand and the craftsmanship that went into creating the bas-reliefs is still evident. Excursions from Shiraz can take in the tomb of Cyrus the Great at Pasargadae and the wonderful rock tombs and Zoroastrian temple at Naqsh-e Rustam.

View of Rooftops, Yazd, Iran

Yazd is an oasis town surrounded by mountains, its roofscape a plethora of blue domes, soaring minarets and hundreds of wind towers. The old town of Yazd is a labyrinth of secret passages, bazaars and mud brick streets, unchanged for centuries. It was, and still is, an important centre for Zoroastrianism. The shrine of Duvazdah Imam, (the 12 Imams) from the 11th-century Seljuq period, the ’Towers of Silence’, pits where the bodies of the dead were left for the vultures and the Zoroastrian Fire Temple are all possible visits.

Mosque, Isfahan, Iran
Shah Mosque, Isfahan, Iran

Widely regarded as one of Iran’s greatest treasures, Isfahan reminds the world of the glories of Persia. Regarded as one of the most beautiful Islamic cities in existence, its cultural and architectural zenith was reached in the 17th century, under Shah Abbas I.

Today, its many wonders remain and so too does its status as a cultural hub. Bisected by the Zayandeh River, Isfahan’s green riverbanks are lively places, buzzing with culture.

Group Tour FAQs

Why should I travel with Steppes Travel to Iran?

For the addition of the expertise of Carolyn Perry, who has travelled extensively in Iran, as well as the opportunity to travel with like-minded individuals.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iran?

All visitors need a visa for Iran. The visa has to be obtained before arrival in all circumstances. Tourist visas issued in the UK have six months’ validity from the date of issue.

For other nationalities, please visit the Iranian embassy webpage.

Is May a good time to travel to Iran?

May in Iran is a great choice. Everything within the country is active and alive. It really is a beautiful time to visit this magnificent country.

What is the standard of accommodation on this tour?

While Iran is blessed with beautiful architecture and fascinating historical sites, it does not currently have a wide selection of luxury hotels. In the large, main cities the standard is good; however, in the smaller towns and villages, hotels are basic. We do our best to use the best available in each place.

Is this tour suitable for solo travellers?

Our group tours are perfect for solo travellers, as travelling as part of an organised group in faraway places does provide security and peace of mind. We handle all of the arrangements for you and there will be a local tour guide on hand throughout to provide advice and help if needed, as well as the expertise of a Tour expert.

If you are willing to share, we will always do our best to match you up with another solo traveller of the same sex so that you do not have to pay for a single room.

If you would prefer the privacy of your own room and would like this guaranteed, then the single room price supplement will apply.

What is the food in Iran like?

Iranian cuisine includes a wide variety of foods ranging from chelow kabab (rice served with roasted meat: barg, koobideh, joojeh, shishleek, soltani, chenjeh), khoresh (stew that is served with white Iranian rice: ghormeh sabzi, gheimeh, fesenjan, and others), ash (a thick soup: for example ash-e anar).

Do I need to be physically fit to enjoy this tour?

You do not need to be particularly fit to participate; there are no long walks involved, but there will be a certain number of stone steps and uneven surfaces.

Can I extend my time in Iran?

Yes, this can easily be arranged at the end of the tour. Private travel arrangements with a car and driver will be provided and a private guide arranged for sightseeing.

Why a Steppes expert-led group tour

1.Experience Matters

We have been running insightful and groundbreaking group tours since our inception in 1989. We have worked with institutions such as the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and run wildlife tours in conjunction with conservation agencies such as Fauna & Flora International, Wildlife Conservation Society, the Orangutan Foundation, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Jane Goodall Institute.

2.Size Matters

Our average group size is typically eight to ten people, smaller than other group tours typically offered – a factor which many of our clients appreciate. Travelling as part of a smaller group provides a more intimate, personalised and relaxed atmosphere.

4.It’s about who you know

We have developed an enviable pool of expertise from which to choose our tour experts, who we carefully select based on their knowledge, companionship and personality. Often, these experts can use their influence to facilitate private access to sites not typically open to the public.

3.Like-Minded People

Steppes Travellers are like-minded people – interesting, interested and curious. Our group tours aim to create an easy and informal atmosphere – we have a lot of fun on our tours and many friendships have been formed.

5.Value for money

Our tours are well-priced to ensure you get real value for money. We include gratuities on the majority of our tours and do not pass on currency surcharges. We strive to look after single travellers as well as we can, keeping single supplements to a minimum.

6.Peace of Mind

When you travel on one of our group tours, you will be looked after by our local agents and your tour expert with the back-up of our 24-hour emergency number and duty manager. All our holidays are fully bonded and protected – our ATOL number is ATOL 6495.
