Tibetan Plateau at dawn

Tibetan Plateau

Referred to as the ‘the roof of the world’, or ‘the Third Pole’, the Tibetan Plateau, which encompasses an area greater than Western Europe, is a place of great geological and cultural importance providing water for more than half of Asia. It is the highest plateau in the world, with an average elevation of over 16,000 feet, the Tibetan Plateau is surrounded by the highest peaks in the Himalayas, Karakoram and Pamir mountain ranges.

Qinghai (Amdo)

Named after Qinghai Lake, the largest inland saltwater lake in China, the Qinghai Province is located in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in western China. Big, bold and beautifully barren, Qinghai is larger than any country in the EU,  and occupies a huge region of the northeastern section of the Tibetan Plateau. As far as Tibetans are concerned, this is Amdo, one of old Tibet’s three traditional provinces. The feel of this region is more Tibetan than Chinese. There are monasteries galore, yaks scattered across the hills by the thousands and nomads camped out across high-altitude grasslands.

Sichuan (Kham)

Sichuan is the second largest of the Chinese provinces and is located in the upper Yangtze River valley in southwestern China. It is bordered by the provinces of Gansu and Shaanxi to the north, the territory of Chongqing municipality to the east,  Guizhou and Yunnan to the south, the Tibet Autonomous Region to the west, and the province of Qinghai to the northwest. It is known by many as the land of many guises. From its modern capital, Chengdu, to its traditional landscape of mist-shrouded, sacred mountains, and a countryside scattered with ancient villages and cliffs of carved Buddhas.

Horse near Litang, China

Litang Horse Festival

Situated on the plains on the outside of Litang, this week-long horse festival kicks off each year in late July/early August. Horsemen from all over the Kham region descend to compete, decking their steeds in brightly decorated bridles, bells and saddles. The festival features amazing demonstrations of horsemanship, including acrobatics, plucking silk scarves off the ground, and shooting (guns and bows) – all performed at full tilt. It is a vibrant festival dating back many years, bringing local communities together. There will be plenty of dancing, both religious (the dancers wearing grotesque wooden masks) and for fun, with both men and women gorgeously dressed in heavily embroidered long-sleeved smocks.

Why a Steppes expert-led group tour

1.Experience Matters

We have been running insightful and groundbreaking group tours since our inception in 1989. We have worked with institutions such as the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and run wildlife tours in conjunction with conservation agencies such as Fauna & Flora International, Wildlife Conservation Society, the Orangutan Foundation, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Jane Goodall Institute.

2.Size Matters

Our average group size is typically eight to ten people, smaller than other group tours typically offered – a factor which many of our clients appreciate. Travelling as part of a smaller group provides a more intimate, personalised and relaxed atmosphere.

4.It’s about who you know

We have developed an enviable pool of expertise from which to choose our tour experts, who we carefully select based on their knowledge, companionship and personality. Often, these experts can use their influence to facilitate private access to sites not typically open to the public.

3.Like-Minded People

Steppes Travellers are like-minded people – interesting, interested and curious. Our group tours aim to create an easy and informal atmosphere – we have a lot of fun on our tours and many friendships have been formed.

5.Value for money

Our tours are well-priced to ensure you get real value for money. We include gratuities on the majority of our tours and do not pass on currency surcharges. We strive to look after single travellers as well as we can, keeping single supplements to a minimum.

6.Peace of Mind

When you travel on one of our group tours, you will be looked after by our local agents and your tour expert with the back-up of our 24-hour emergency number and duty manager. All our holidays are fully bonded and protected – our ATOL number is ATOL 6495.
