Why we like it

Zakouma is a unique safari destination, but it is not for the first-time traveller to Africa. If you are lucky enough to have visited Africa a few times and are looking for something different then Zakouma certainly offers that. It also affords a level of exclusivity rarely found elsewhere, with Tinga Lodge the only conventional safari lodge in the park.

Zakouma National Park

Explore during the dry season, when this impressive landscape can be accessed at will. Wildlife abounds in Zakouma. And whilst it is the elephants that steal the headlines – moving as they do in one vast super herd – the sheer number of other species is just as impressive. Lions, leopards and numerous antelope species all inhabit the park, whilst recent sightings have confirmed the presence of cheetahs.

On the ground and in the air, the birdlife is also spectacular. Huge flocks of black crowned cranes inhabit Zakouma, as well as pelicans, Abyssinian ground hornbills, maribou storks and black-capped gonoleks.

On Safari

Each day will be slightly different, but the focus will be on wildlife and exploration throughout. Early starts guarantee better sightings, particularly given the hot temperatures that Chad experiences during the middle of the day. Therefore, days are likely to be long, usually with time to rest during the hottest part.

Game drives are led by Doug, in an open vehicle with room for six window seats. The vehicle will, however, have a roof. Early morning drives set out at dawn when the wildlife is most active. You return to camp for breakfast and perhaps a walk. In the afternoon, you will embark on an afternoon tour, with a sundowner stop along the way to appreciate the beautiful light on the landscape. You will return to camp after sunset.

Visits to Villages and the Headquarters

On one of the days, Doug will try to arrange for you to visit a local village on the outskirts of the park. This will take all day and you may have a game drive later if there is time. On another day, if possible, you will have a chance to camp in a temporary camp by the river in comfortable dome tents (this cannot be guaranteed).

Doug will do his best to ensure that you see and do as much as possible during your stay, including a visit to the headquarters of African Parks, where vital work is done on wildlife monitoring and protection.

Below you can see some of the wonderful places we have recommended for this journey.

Tinga Lodge £££££

  • Chad
  • Safari and Wildlife Lodge

An old government-style lodge of some 50 years ago overlooking the Rosse River. It is a pretty spot although none of the rooms looks out directly to the river. Most rooms have recently been renovated and upgraded. All are en suite and can be arranged as double or twin rooms. Being thatched and round, these rooms are cool as the temperature can reach almost 40 degrees Celsius in the peak season. All have 24 hours of electricity with plug sockets in the rooms.

Why a Steppes expert-led group tour

1.Experience Matters

We have been running insightful and groundbreaking group tours since our inception in 1989. We have worked with institutions such as the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and run wildlife tours in conjunction with conservation agencies such as Fauna & Flora International, Wildlife Conservation Society, the Orangutan Foundation, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Jane Goodall Institute.

2.Size Matters

Our average group size is typically eight to ten people, smaller than other group tours typically offered – a factor which many of our clients appreciate. Travelling as part of a smaller group provides a more intimate, personalised and relaxed atmosphere.

4.It’s about who you know

We have developed an enviable pool of expertise from which to choose our tour experts, who we carefully select based on their knowledge, companionship and personality. Often, these experts can use their influence to facilitate private access to sites not typically open to the public.

3.Like-Minded People

Steppes Travellers are like-minded people – interesting, interested and curious. Our group tours aim to create an easy and informal atmosphere – we have a lot of fun on our tours and many friendships have been formed.

5.Value for money

Our tours are well-priced to ensure you get real value for money. We include gratuities on the majority of our tours and do not pass on currency surcharges. We strive to look after single travellers as well as we can, keeping single supplements to a minimum.

6.Peace of Mind

When you travel on one of our group tours, you will be looked after by our local agents and your tour expert with the back-up of our 24-hour emergency number and duty manager. All our holidays are fully bonded and protected – our ATOL number is ATOL 6495.
